[Semicon Korea] The Third Wave of Semiconductors Is Imminent; Avoid Excessive Optimism for IoT
Published2016.01.27 16:19SEMICON Korea 2016, a semiconductor manufacturing technology exhibition, opened on the 27th at COEX in Samseong-dong, Seoul.
On the opening day, Semicon Korea held a keynote speech under the theme "Innovation: Creating the Future," with invited speakers from Synopsis, Texas Instruments, and Audi participating in thematic presentations.
Synopsys CEO Arth de Zeus, who served as the first speaker in the keynote address held on this day, presented on the topic of 'IoT: from Silicon to Software'.
"The semiconductor industry has continued steady growth through innovation in silicon, software, and other areas," said CEO Arts, pointing out that "however, the growth rate has decreased by 4.5% in recent years." He analyzed that the semiconductor industry was driven by aggressive mergers and acquisitions among semiconductor companies and large-scale investments by China.
Along with this, CEO Arts stated that while he believes there is an overly optimistic aspect to the recent IoT (Internet of Things) industry, there are many positive elements when viewed from a software perspective rather than a hardware one. While smartphones led the hardware market in the past, semiconductor software is now leading the market, and the semiconductor industry stated that the third wave is imminent.
IoT based on the Smart Everything concept has expanded the horizons of connectivity through the connection of physical layers and functions, extending from sensor technology and data collection to software and digital intelligence.
He emphasized that in increasingly advanced technology, hardware technology—specifically semiconductor technology—must support the demands of software in terms of performance, power consumption, and price.
Synopsys stated that investment should particularly be made at the intersection of hardware and software, and that its recent acquisitions of software, quality, and security-related companies are not unrelated to this.
Finally, CEO Arts stated, "An era of new possibilities is opening up in low power, connectivity, and smart cloud," adding, "In this new wave extending from PCs to the internet, networking, servers, and the cloud, semiconductor performance has not only achieved more than tenfold growth but also dreams of more than a hundredfold improvement."
