Samsung SDS Builds Second Financial Data Center in Chuncheon
Published2016.02.03 15:45Samsung SDS announced on the 3rd that it signed a land purchase MOU with Chuncheon City at the Samsung SDS Campus in Jamsil, attended by CEO Chung Yoo-sung, Chuncheon Mayor Choi Dong-yong, and Saenuri Party lawmaker Kim Jin-tae (Chuncheon City), and will build a state-of-the-art second financial data center (tentative name: Chuncheon IT Center) in Chuncheon with high efficiency and eco-friendliness.
Samsung SDS decided to build a data center in Chuncheon because it possesses optimal environmental conditions, such as an average annual temperature that is about 1 to 2 degrees lower than that of the metropolitan area, allowing for the maximum extension of the period for outside air inflow for cooling, minimal impact from yellow dust, and no earthquakes.
In addition, the locational advantage was also taken into consideration, as it possesses accessibility, such as being within an hour's distance from the metropolitan area, due to the nature of the financial system.
The Chuncheon IT Center is a dedicated data center for Samsung’s financial affiliates. It is a global-level premium (Tier 3) facility incorporating eco-friendly, high-efficiency, and cutting-edge technology, with the goal of completion in the second half of 2019.
Samsung SDS has decided to build a high-efficiency, eco-friendly, state-of-the-art data center by actively utilizing renewable energy sources such as geothermal systems, solar power generation, and natural lighting to maximize energy efficiency.
In addition, the Chuncheon IT Center is planned to be designed to enable uninterrupted operation and maintenance even under various failure situations that may occur during data center operations, by duplicating key core facilities to meet the high availability requirements of the financial industry and configuring key cooling facilities such as temperature and humidity control systems as backups.
Samsung SDS CEO Yoo-Sung Jeong stated, “Chuncheon is ideal for the eco-friendly, high-efficiency, advanced data centers pursued by Samsung SDS, as it possesses the climate, infrastructure, and location necessary for the efficient and stable operation of data centers.”
Chuncheon Mayor Choi Dong-yong said, “Chuncheon’s status will be elevated by attracting the nation’s largest IT company.”
Meanwhile, Samsung SDS operates four data centers in Korea, including Sangam, Gwacheon, Suwon, and Gumi.

European Patent Applications Surpass 200,000 for the First Time… South Korea Maintains 5th Place, Led by Batteries and Telecommunications
According to the European Patent Office (EPO)'s 'Technology Dashboard 2025', European patent applications last year reached 201,974, surpassing 200,000 for the first time. Korean companies and inventors filed 14,355 applications, representing a 9.5% increase from the previous year and maintaining 5th place by country. Battery, digital communication, and semiconductor technologies led the growth, with Samsung ranking as the top EPO applicant for the second consecutive year and LG reaching 3rd place. The presence of major domestic cities such as Seoul, Suwon, and Yongin was also confirmed. It was also revealed that Korea's European patent strategy is expanding beyond individual technologies to span the entire industry.

SK Telecom First Applies AI-Based Network Operations at Gwanghwamun K-Pop Concert
SK Telecom announced that it applied an AI-based network operation system for the first time at a large-scale K-pop concert held in the Gwanghwamun area of Seoul on March 21st, managing communication quality throughout the event. Mobile data usage during the three hours before and after the concert reached 12.15TB, approximately doubling compared to the same time slot the previous weekend. SK Telecom monitored traffic using the AI system 'A-One' in five-minute and 50-meter units to respond to potential overload situations, while also operating temporary communication facilities and on-site personnel in parallel. This case is interpreted as confirmation of the practical applicability of AI-based autonomous network operation in an environment where demand from dense events and foreign users increases simultaneously.
