Interest in the Industrial Internet of Things (Industrial IoT) is rapidly increasing as the government has decided to build 10,000 smart factories by 2020 as part of “Manufacturing Innovation 3.0.”

The Internet of Things (IoT), which has recently been receiving intense attention, is primarily discussed in the context of consumer products such as homes and automobiles; however, the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) industry, which will serve as the core foundation for smart factories, is expected to overwhelm the consumer IoT market in terms of market size and adoption timing.

The industrial IoT market, known by various names such as Industrial IoT, IIoT, I2oT, and Industry 4.0, spans across industrial sectors including transportation, manufacturing, consumer goods, oil, gas, chemicals, and plants, and is a technology that leads the construction of smart factories.

Experts predict that by 2020, the number of industrial IoT devices will exceed that of consumer-centric IoT or smartphones, and forecast that corporate investment in industrial IoT, which was worth $20 billion in 2012, will grow more than 25 times to $500 billion by 2020.

Amidst this, an event offering various information on the Industrial Internet of Things is attracting attention. e4ds.com, a specialized IT and electronics news channel, announced that it will host the "2016 IIoT Innovation DAY" event, a seminar on the Industrial Internet of Things market and technology, on Friday, March 11.

Organized by COEX and held in conjunction with the International Smart Factory Automation Exhibition (Automation World 2016), this seminar focuses on spreading IoT technology to the industrial sector by providing the latest information in the field of industrial IoT, ranging from semiconductors to communications, platforms, software, testing, and security.

The seminar will begin with a presentation by Lee Soon-yeol, Managing Director of Rockwell Automation Korea, a leader in the industrial automation field, on the topic of "Current Status and Prospects of Manufacturing Innovation Based on Industrial Internet of Things." Managing Director Lee stated, "All industrial equipment, ranging from sensors to controllers and robots in industrial sites, is becoming digitized and intelligent, and is rapidly being integrated and connected via Industrial Ethernet." He added, "Furthermore, the integration of factory automation technology (OT) and business system information technology (IT) with IoT technology enables factories to connect with the supply chain in real time, establish a production system that responds immediately to customer orders, and facilitate the prediction of risks and rapid response through real-time big data analysis."

Kim Ik-seon, a manager at Infineon Technologies, which provides semiconductors based on various security solutions to industrial sectors, emphasizes the importance of security under the theme 'Choose the Right Security for IIoT'. Manager Kim stated that while everyone would agree on the importance of security in IoT, applying the best security solutions best suited to the wide variety of IoT platforms is a challenging task. Accordingly, he said in his presentation, “We will discuss what aspects are most difficult and what is practically required to implement security suitable for IIoT.”

General Electric (GE), which launched the manufacturing IoT platform Predix in 2014, is also scheduled to present its achievements at this seminar. Through the Predix platform, GE collects, analyzes, and monitors massive amounts of data generated from over 10 million sensors attached to its 1 trillion managed assets by storing them in a distributed manner. The company plans to introduce innovative digital technologies that are transforming it into a software company, ranging from the industrial internet platform Predix and industrial PaaS to industrial automation and big data.

Lee Woong-jae, a team leader at Gemalto, a global leader in digital security, will introduce embedded systems, IoT, software, and licensing cases in embedded environments under the theme of 'Software Licensing for Revenue Maximization in Embedded Environments'.

Announcement of IoT Measurement and Security Technologies

Kyung-Min Kwon, a manager at Tektronix, who is presenting on IoT measurement solution technology, divides the implementation of consumer IoT and other industrial IoT requirements into six categories. The six requirements are: ① whether to implement it as a single complete set or as a module to be added to other devices; ② verification of the RF design for transmitting and receiving communication; ③ how to set current consumption guidelines when battery operation is required due to difficulties in supplying external power; ④ whether radiated noise from the equipment causes performance degradation or interference; ⑤ which communication standards to use to exchange data with the database or control unit; and ⑥ how to check for communication interference on the network. Manager Kwon stated that he would discuss measurement solution technologies capable of addressing these six matters.

Finally, Seo Hyuk-jun, a technical engineer at LG CNS, will present on the topic of "Smart Factory Security Response Measures," covering IoT industry security trends, wired and wireless security for existing factories, smart factory security, and countermeasures against security threats.
