LG Electronics and Intel are collaborating on research and development of '5G-based telematics technology,' the next-generation automotive communication technology.

Intel held a press conference in Barcelona, Spain, where 'MWC 2016' is being held on the 22nd (local time), and announced that it will proceed with 5G-related technology cooperation with six companies, including LG Electronics. Among the six companies, LG Electronics is the only auto parts company.

'Telematics' is a vehicle wireless internet technology that combines automobiles and wireless communication, and provides various functions such as traffic information, emergency rescue in case of a car accident, tracking the location of stolen vehicles, and remote vehicle diagnosis.

The industry expects that 5G-based telematics will be able to significantly reduce the 'data transmission speed' by 33 times or more compared to 4G LTE-based telematics and the 'data response speed (latency)' time by 1/10.

5G-based telematics can update vehicle software at high speeds via 'OTA (Over The Air, a standard for transmitting and receiving information about system registration in wireless communication systems)' and can download large-capacity multimedia content such as videos to the vehicle's infotainment system at high speeds.

In particular, the 'data response speed' has been significantly reduced, enabling the stable implementation of 'V2X (Vehicle to Everything)' technology even when moving at high speeds. For example, by connecting all communications between vehicles, vehicles and infrastructure, and vehicles and pedestrians without delay using 5G technology, traffic accidents can be prevented in advance.

Meanwhile, LG Electronics is consolidating its telematics leadership in the smart car sector by combining the communication capabilities of its MC Division and the automotive parts-related technologies of its VC Division.

LG Electronics has succeeded in supplying LTE-based telematics products, rather than the existing 3G or 2G, for the first time in the automotive parts industry. In particular, it is the exclusive supplier of vehicle telematics for GM's 4G LTE telematics system, 'OnStar'.

LG Electronics VC Business Unit IVI (In Vehicle Infotainment) Vice President Kim Jin-yong said, “Through our collaboration with Intel, we will also lead the market in the next-generation automotive communication technology, 5G telematics.”
