Built-in balun transformers in RF and LO ports

Linear Technology announced the release of a double-balanced mixer (product name: LTC5548) that operates as an up-converter or down-converter with a very wide frequency range extending from 2GHz to 14GHz. The LTC5548 features built-in balun transformers in the RF and LO ports and enables single-ended operation while providing a 50Ω match at 2GHz to 13.6GHz and 1GHz to 12GHz, respectively.

Additionally, the IF port is available from DC to 6GHz and supports broadband transmitters and receivers in the baseband. The LTC5548 provides high linearity of 24.4dBm IIP3 at 5.8GHz and 21.4dBm at 9GHz.

The LTC5548 has a built-in LO buffer, which simplifies microwave transmitter and receiver design, and since only 0dBm drive is required, there is no need for an external high-output LO amplifier circuit. Furthermore, the LTC5548 allows for the selection of an on-chip LO frequency doubler, supporting the use of generally available low-frequency synthesizers at a lower cost.

The performance of the LTC5548 is ideal for a wide range of microwave applications, including broadband microwave backhaul, the newly emerging 5.8 GHz unlicensed band and 14 GHz LTE-Advanced broadband wireless services, satellite broadband transceivers, radar systems, X-band and Ku-band transceivers, spectrum analyzers, RF test equipment, and satellite modems.

The LTC5548 provides exceptionally robust ESD management performance with a 2,000V ESD HBM (human body model) rating on all pins. The device features a small 12-pin 3mm x 2mm plastic QFN package, offering a compact solution footprint that minimizes the need for external components. The device guarantees operation over temperatures ranging from –40°C to 105°C, and the mixer is powered by a single 3.3V supply with a nominal power current of 120mA. Additionally, the LTC5548 provides an enable pin to shut down the IC.

When disabled, this device consumes only 100μA of maximum standby current. The enable pin can turn the device on or off within 0.2μs, supporting time-division duplex (TDD) or burst mode RF applications. The LTC5548 is priced at $9.50 per unit in 1,000-unit quantities.
