Over 150 people flocked to the Industrial IoT seminar hosted by this magazine
Reflecting significant interest in industrial IoT platforms, software, testing, and security technologies

e4ds.com, a specialized IT and electronics news channel, announced that the "2016 IIoT Innovation DAY" event, an industrial IoT market and technology seminar held on the 11th, was successfully conducted with the participation of over 150 people.

The 'Industrial IoT' market, known by various names such as Industrial IoT, IIoT, I2oT, and Industry 4.0, spans across industrial sectors including transportation, manufacturing, consumer goods, oil, gas, chemicals, and plants, and is a technology that leads the construction of smart factories.

Reflecting the government's policy to build 10,000 smart factories by 2020 as part of "Manufacturing Innovation 3.0," over 150 industry officials flocked to the event, demonstrating high interest in the Industrial Internet of Things (Industrial IoT).

Experts predict that by 2020, the number of industrial IoT devices will exceed that of consumer-centric IoT or smartphones, and forecast that corporate investment in industrial IoT, which was worth $20 billion in 2012, will grow more than 25 times to $500 billion by 2020.

The event was held as a side event of the International Smart Factory Automation Exhibition (Automation World 2016), hosted by COEX. The seminar focused on spreading IoT technology throughout the industry by providing the latest information in the field of industrial IoT, ranging from semiconductors to communications, platforms, software, testing, and security.

At the seminar, Lee Soon-yeol, Managing Director of Rockwell Automation Korea, a leader in the industrial automation field, gave a presentation on the topic of "Current Status and Prospects of Manufacturing Innovation Based on Industrial Internet of Things." Executive Director Lee Soon-yeol stated, “The integration of factory automation technology (OT) and business system information technology (IT) with Internet of Things (IoT) technology enables the proactive prediction of risks and rapid response through real-time big data analysis.”

Attendees of the "2016 IIoT Innovation DAY" event are looking around the participating companies' demo booths set up alongside the seminar.

Ik-Seon Kim, a manager at Infineon Technologies, a provider of semiconductors based on various security solutions for the industrial sector, emphasized the importance of security under the theme "Choose the Right Security for IIoT." Manager Kim noted that while everyone would agree on the importance of security in IoT, applying the best security solutions most suitable for the vastly different IoT platforms is a challenging task.

General Electric (GE), which launched a manufacturing IoT platform called Predix in 2014, also announced its achievements at this seminar. Through the Predix platform, GE collects, analyzes, and monitors large volumes of data generated from over 10 million sensors attached to its 1 trillion managed assets by distributing and storing them.

"GE's Won-Jun Cho, a manager, said, 'If you use 80% of the cost for innovation rather than maintaining the status quo, you can apply specialized technologies for the Industrial Internet environment with ideas for industrial innovation that handle within a few months or weeks what used to be applied for months or years,' adding, 'GE Predix promises a partner ecosystem, services, and module development.'"

In addition, Lee Woong-jae, a team leader at Gemalto, a global leader in the digital security field, introduced embedded systems, IoT, software, and licensing cases in embedded environments under the theme of 'Software Licensing for Revenue Maximization in Embedded Environments'.

Kyung-min Kwon, a manager at Tektronix who presented on IoT measurement solution technology, explained the requirements for consumer IoT implementation and other industrial IoT by dividing them into six categories, thereby answering questions about IoT test technology.

Finally, in his presentation on "Smart Factory Security Response Measures," Seo Hyuk-jun, a technical engineer at LG CNS, emphasized that "new technologies such as IoT and cloud computing have increased factory system efficiency while simultaneously raising security threats," adding that "it is necessary to establish an IoT security framework, diagnose security vulnerabilities, and assess the security risks of smart factories, in addition to existing IT security."
