Artificial intelligence (AI) does not replace humans but serves an assisting function.



Reflecting the match of the century between Google's artificial intelligence AlphaGo and professional Go player Lee Se-dol, over 500 industry professionals flocked to the International Symposium on Artificial Intelligence held at the COEX Conference Room.

The International Symposium on Artificial Intelligence, held under the theme of AI ICT strategies for realizing a future creative economy, was hosted by the Ministry of Science, ICT and Future Planning and the National Research Foundation of Korea (NRF).

At the symposium, Rob High, IBM’s Chief Technology Officer, delivered the first keynote speech titled "The future of Cognitive Computing, Watson," followed by a presentation on Korea’s artificial intelligence R&D development strategy by Kim Hyung-chul, CP of the Information and Communications Technology Promotion Center.

Following this, Wei-Ying Ma, Vice President of Microsoft Research Asia, took the stage as the second speaker and delivered a speech on the topic of "Building an Artificially Intelligent and Socially Engaging Conversational Agent."

In the afternoon symposium program, Junichi Tsujii, Director of the AI Research Institute in Japan, spoke on the topic "AIRC Perspectives on AI," and Lee Keun-bae, Executive Vice President of Samsung Electronics, spoke on "Industry AI Development."Tomaso A. Poggio, Professor of Brain and Cognitive Sciences at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, will present on "The Problem of Intelligence: Today's Science, Tomorrow's Engineering," and Lee Sung-hwan, Professor at Korea University, will present on "Current Status and Prospects of Artificial Intelligence Research."

In his keynote speech, Rob High, IBM’s Chief Technology Officer, stated, “While Artificial Intelligence (AI) is a term primarily used in academia, we use the term Cognitive Computing for the best approach and system research,” adding, “We must develop it in a direction that enhances human experience and strengthens cognitive capabilities under the goal of what this system can be used for.”

He continued, "The key aspect of cognitive computing is deriving better judgments and ideas, which will provide greater satisfaction to humans," adding, "This can be utilized in various fields such as healthcare, financial investment, and the economy."

Hai, Head of Technology Development, who introduced that IBM's cognitive systems research is also focusing on capturing human emotions and thoughts, emphasized, "Cognitive systems have been developed to enhance human cognitive abilities. This does not mean they replace humans, but rather that they assist humans in better research and thinking. There is no need to fear artificial intelligence because it helps humans use their time more freely and effectively."
