The 5th UV LED/Curing Summit 2016 to be held on April 22


UV LEDs are emerging as a new alternative for domestic companies facing deteriorating profitability as white LED applications become commonplace and Chinese manufacturers continuously introduce low-cost solutions to the market, thereby worsening price competitiveness.

News of mergers and acquisitions in the UV LED industry, which began to emerge as early as the year before last, demonstrates the fierce competition among global companies to secure a leading position in this market. SETi, which was acquired by Seoul Viosys last year, is establishing a new domain by specializing its business in deep ultraviolet LEDs within this field, and Chinese and Japanese companies have also recently been actively entering this sector.

Compared to existing mercury-based products, UV LEDs offer advantages such as faster response time, more efficient energy consumption, smaller size, and longer lifespan. The influence of UV LEDs in the fields of medicine, sterilization, treatment, semiconductor manufacturing processes, and printing is growing day by day, and recently, curing processes applying them are increasingly spreading across all industrial sectors involving assembly processes, including electronic devices.

Market research firm Digitimes Research released a report stating that this market was worth $113 million in 2015 and is expected to grow explosively to around $320 million by 2018. This report also predicted that competition in UV LED manufacturing would be fierce among the three major countries in Northeast Asia, including Korea.
