Supply of solutions that prioritize 'security,' the fundamental principle of network separation projects

With the network separation project, which has been underway since 2012, beginning to pick up speed, ATEN Korea (CEO Chen Shun-cheng), a global KVM switch manufacturer, announced on the 6th that it plans to provide optimal solutions and the best TCO (Total Cost of Ownership) for South Korea's network separation project by expanding its portfolio of KVM switches for network separation.

The network separation project, which became more active following the incident in 2013 where major domestic broadcasters and financial computer networks were infected with malware and caused significant inconvenience to the public, such as the suspension of ATMs in the banking sector, aims to fundamentally block attacks from external sources, such as hacking or malware, by fundamentally separating internal network PCs used for business from external network PCs connected to the external internet.

Furthermore, as leaks of customer information held by information and communication service-based companies continue to occur, a systematic network segmentation system is emerging as the most reliable solution for protecting the public's valuable information assets. Accordingly, in August 2012, the government mandated network separation for telecommunications operators, government agencies, and related organizations that held personal information of more than 1 million users or had information and communication service revenue exceeding 10 billion won.

Since the early stages of the network separation business, ATEN has been deploying a diverse lineup of KVM switches into the sector, including the CS62US, which supports VGA monitors and USB keyboards and mice; the CS82U, which supports both VGA monitors and PS/2-USB keyboards and mice; the CS72D and CS1762A, which support DVI monitors; and the CS692, which supports HDMI. Thanks to this, the company has been able to supply solutions that support various interfaces and control all necessary internal and external network PCs. It is known that ATEN currently possesses over 100 types of KVM switches, and the company stated that it is deploying approximately 20 of these products, which are specialized for the domestic environment, into the network separation business.

An ATEN marketing representative explained, “The first premise of network segmentation is security, and the final premise is also security. While embedding the KVM into the PC appears relatively simple and cost-effective, if a problem occurs with the PC, it can create vulnerabilities in security—the fundamental principle of network segmentation—due to data and personal information leaks resulting from the unauthorized movement of the PC. Furthermore, it cannot lower the Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) in terms of system maintenance.”
