PyeongChang Winter Olympics 5G Service Plan Announced

KT announced on the 25th that it will hold the 'IWPC 5G Workshop' to foster a 5G ecosystem at the JW Marriott Hotel in Dongdaemun for five days from the 25th to the 29th.

The International Wireless Industry Consortium (IWPC) was established in 1998 to industrialize semiconductor development and manufacturing technologies. Currently, it has expanded its scope to cover overall wireless technologies and provides direction for the entire industry through presentations and discussions among operators.



This 'IWPC 5G Workshop,' held for new innovations in 5G pilot services and terminals, was hosted by KT for the first time in Korea at the request of the IWPC Secretariat.

The 'IWPC 5G Workshop' consists of a total of 16 sessions over 4 nights and 5 days, and with the participation of over 50 companies including China Mobile, Sprint, Huawei, as well as Samsung, Ericsson, Nokia, and Intel, various agendas for the 5G ecosystem and services are discussed, ranging from system/terminal development to measurement equipment, procurement of ultra-high frequency band components/devices, and development of user-experience services.

In particular, at the workshop, KT [discussed] the 'PyeongChang 5G standard' from last February Following the confirmation of the 'Trial Specification,' a practical technology development roadmap and global activity plan for the early commercialization of 5G will be introduced, and plans for creating a global 5G ecosystem and 5G services for the PyeongChang Winter Olympics will be announced.

Oh Seong-mok, Vice President of KT’s Network Division, stated, “This IWPC workshop will serve as a cornerstone for 5G commercialization and ecosystem building in 2020, and this is the reason KT hosted the workshop,” adding, “We will use this opportunity to solidify our leadership in the 5G ecosystem.”

Graham Carter, Chief Technology Advisor at IWPC, said, “This workshop will provide global technology leaders with an opportunity to discuss innovations in 5G pilot services, network equipment, and user terminals.”
