SK Telecom Demonstrates 5G Wireless Transmission and Infrastructure Network Technology at MWC Shanghai
Published2016.07.01 11:30SK Telecom (CEO Jang Dong-hyun) launched ‘5G diplomacy’ at ‘MWC Shanghai 2016’ (hereinafter MWC Shanghai) to promote Korea’s advanced 5G technology to the world and to encourage cooperation from global telecommunications companies and equipment manufacturers.
SK Telecom announced on the 30th that it signed a three-party cooperation MOU for joint 5G research with Germany's Deutsche Telekom (DT) and equipment manufacturer Ericsson at this year's 'MWC Shanghai'.
SK Telecom CTO Jinseong Choi and Ericsson CTO Ulf Evalson attended the signing ceremony held in Shanghai on the 29th, and Deutsche Telekom CTO Bruno Jacobfeuerborn participated via video conference and pledged close cooperation through joint research and development of 5G mobile communication networks in the future.
The agreement between SK Telecom and global telecommunications carriers and equipment manufacturers to cooperate in the 5G field is considered significant as it serves as the starting point for cooperation among operators for future 5G deployment, and it also demonstrates SK Telecom's international leadership in 5G technology.
Prior to this, SK Telecom and Deutsche Telekom signed a cooperation MOU at 'MWC2016 Spain' held in Barcelona earlier this year. Since then, the two sides have been cooperating on 5G-related technologies through several practical workshops, and by leading the way to collaboration with Ericsson, the world's largest telecommunications equipment research and development company, the cooperation has advanced to the stage of actual 5G network construction.

Meanwhile, SK Telecom's Jinseong Choi, head of the Comprehensive Technology Research Center, participated as a panelist and presented at the GSMA-hosted 'Network 2020 Summit' discussion ('5G - Beyond Speed, Into a New Paradigm') held during 'MWC Shanghai' with the participation of approximately 30 major global telecommunications companies, including AT&T and Verizon.
At the discussion held that day, President Choi revealed his vision for the future of the 5G era, saying, “Unlike previous generations of mobile communication systems, the 5G system will be based on an open platform and provide personalized and customized services, and it will become the foundation for a ‘life transformation’ (Life Transformer) that will allow users to live a safer, more efficient, and more enjoyable life.”
President Choi also drew attention from attendees by providing a general explanation of SK Telecom's differentiated 5G technologies and services, as well as the current status of standardization, and by emphasizing the need to create a 5G ecosystem.
SK Telecom also demonstrated 26.9Gbps 5G wireless transmission with Ericsson at the GSMA booth set up in the GSMA Innovation City within the MWC exhibition hall, along with a demonstration of the '5G modular virtualized infrastructure' equipment that will be applied to the 5G test network later this year.

KT (Chairman Hwang Chang-gyu) announced that it will participate in the "Mobile World Congress Shanghai 2016," Asia's largest mobile communications exhibition, to be held in Shanghai, China from June 29 to July 1 for three days. MWC Shanghai, hosted by GSMA (Global System for Mobile Communications Association), first began in Shanghai in 2012 and is being held for the fifth consecutive year this year. Samsung Electronics Develops Antennas and Power Amplifiers for 5G Base Stations and Terminals
Samsung Electronics announced on the 29th that it has developed wireless communication technology for miniaturizing 5G base stations and terminals. Samsung Electronics has developed a small 5G antenna with a thickness of 1mm or less by applying a technology that deposits part of the antenna's functionality onto the device's casing. Additionally, by efficiently designing a power amplifier (PA) that amplifies wireless signals, the company has improved output power by more than 2 times compared to existing ultra-high frequency products and enhanced power efficiency by more than 50%. Existing base stations and terminals used in 5G demonstrations had limitations for commercialization due to their relatively large size, but this technology is expected to enable product miniaturization.
