LG CNS Develops Android SDK for Humanoid Robot 'Pepper'

LG CNS has completed building a software development kit (SDK) for developing applications for SoftBank Robotics' humanoid robot 'Pepper' and provided it to SoftBank Robotics.
The 'Pepper SDK for Android Studio (hereinafter referred to as Pepper SDK)', which was released at the last Google Developer Conference (Google I/O), runs on Google Android Studio, a development tool familiar to Android developers.
The significance of the Pepper SDK provided by LG CNS this time is that it supports the widely distributed operating system Android and can facilitate the development of apps for Pepper. This is expected to make it easier for Android developers around the world to develop robot apps, which will also lead to more developers for Pepper.
Currently, the SDK for Pepper supports Windows and Linux, and the Window and Linux Beta versions can be downloaded from the SoftBank Robotics developer site.
Considering that this project is an app development environment used by Android developers around the world, LG CNS focused its own embedded software capabilities accumulated in various business areas since the early 2000s.
LG CNS has proven its software development capabilities for robots by jointly developing with SoftBank Robotics the key functions required to develop apps for Pepper: ▲ Android Studio plug-in, ▲ Tablet AVD (Android Virtual Device) for robots, and ▲ Animation Timeline for designing robot movements.
Meanwhile, LG CNS designed and manufactured the 'display' attached to Pepper's chest and provided it in its entirety to Softbank Robotics. In addition, LG CNS's 'IoT Robot' was demonstrated at 'CES (Consumer Electronic Show) 2015', the world's largest IT and electronics product exhibition, and received much attention. IoT robots can recognize space, drive autonomously, and perform environmental monitoring.
LG CNS has established a strategic partnership with Softbank Robotics, and has been continuously promoting business by discovering ideas for new businesses. The 'Pepper SDK' provided to Softbank Robotics this time will be an opportunity for the IT industry looking for new businesses to create various services using robots.

Running robot industry, crawling parts technology 'Localization rate less than 20%'
The domestic localization rate of components in the robotics sector, spurred by interest in artificial intelligence technology, has been below 50% according to statistics over the past three years, with major core components showing a localization rate of less than 20%. Robots are broadly categorized into industrial, professional service, and personal service robots. According to 2014 data, industrial robots accounted for 9.5B (64%), professional service robots for 3.6B (24%), and personal service robots for 1.7B (12%). The domestic component market for these robots reached a total sales volume of 396.2 billion won, representing 13.9% of total components; however, from an import perspective, 50.1% of components were found to be import-dependent. In other words, this means that half of the core components such as image sensors were imported and used. This aligns with the fact that there are not many domestic companies manufacturing core robot components, which are categorized into sensors, controllers, and actuators. When examining the technology level and localization rate for each component type, this situation becomes clearly evident.

If selected for the soft robot research team, a total of 12.5 billion won will be provided over 7 years.
The Ministry of Science, ICT and Future Planning announced that it will solicit research teams starting July 19th (Tuesday) to support the soft robotics field as an Engineering Research Center (ERC). Soft robotics is one of the future promising technologies identified by the Ministry of Science, ICT and Future Planning as a follow-up measure after the 2015 New Year policy briefing, which includes soft robotics, brain-inspired chips, biomimetic sensory sensors, and diagnostic and therapeutic nanomachines. Soft robotics, in which all or part of existing robots are replaced with flexible and elastic structures, is a new type of robot based on the principles of movement and interaction of living organisms in unstructured environments.
