Bumpless chip-scale packaging targets flexible electronic products such as multi-functional connected smart cards.

STMicroelectronics (ST) has launched the LDBL20, an ultra-small 200mA LDO (low-dropout) regulator in a 0.47 x 0.47 x 0.2mm chip-scale package.

The company said the product is suitable for flexible electronic products such as wearables and portable devices, as well as multi-functional connected smart cards.

The LDBL20's bumpless STSTAMP™ package enables this exceptionally small footprint and low mounting height by overcoming the limitations of minimum I/O area and height previously imposed by the diameter of conventional flip-chip solder bumps. The LDBL20 is part of ST's family of miniature LDOs, which includes 300mA output devices in sizes ranging from 2 x 2mm DFN to 0.69 x 0.69mm CSP.

The LDBL20 isn't just compact; it also delivers exceptional performance. Its 200mA output is powerful enough to rival larger devices from other manufacturers.

The input voltage ranges from 15 V to 5.5 V, providing an average dropout of 200 mV. It also features PSRR performance of 80dB at 100Hz and 50dB at 100kHz, simplifying filtering over a wide frequency range and providing a stable rail for low-power circuits in battery-operated applications.

Quiescent current is only 20µA at no load, 100µA at full load, and 0.3µA in standby mode, maximizing efficiency under all operating conditions.

Output voltages range from 0.8 V to 5.0 V in 50 mV increments, and can be purchased as needed. The LDBL20's built-in features are also available, including logic-controlled electronic shutdown, internal soft-start, and active output-voltage discharge when required.

An evaluation board for the LDBL20, the STEVAL-ISB034V1, is also available for purchase, which helps implement designs for a variety of products, including fitness and blood pressure monitors, blood glucose meters, hearing aids, wearable sensors, smart headphones, portable audio devices, smart plugs, smart watches, and smart cards.

The LDBL20 is currently in production, with pricing starting at $0.25 for orders of 1,000 pieces.
