KT Chairman Hwang Chang-kyu sent a congratulatory message via hologram video to Jin Jong-oh (37, KT), who became the first athlete in Olympic shooting history to win three consecutive gold medals in a single event.

KT announced that Chairman Hwang Chang-kyu made a surprise appearance via hologram video at the PyeongChang promotional booth in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil on the 12th (13th in Korea) to congratulate Jin Jong-oh, who won the gold medal in the 50m pistol shooting event at the Rio Olympics.

The 'Global Hologram' used to deliver this congratulatory message was produced at 40% of its actual size, allowing the image to be viewed from all four directions: front, back, left, and right. As a three-dimensional image, it provides the feeling of being right next to the viewer, even when the message is delivered from a distance. In reality, Seoul and Rio de Janeiro, where the Olympics are being held, are approximately 20,000 km apart.

After hearing the news of Jin Jong-oh's gold medal early on the morning of the 11th (Korean time), KT Chairman Hwang Chang-kyu filmed a holographic congratulatory message at a hologram studio in Gwanghwamun to deliver a more special congratulations and to celebrate Jin Jong-oh's world-first three consecutive Olympic shooting victories.

Hologram video was transmitted from the 'Hologram Studio' located at KT Square in Gwanghwamun, Seoul, to the PyeongChang Promotion Hall in Rio de Janeiro on the other side of the globe via a dedicated line based on an undersea cable built by KT. KT's submarine cable is being used for communication and broadcast relay between Korea and Brazil during the Rio Olympics. The traffic transmission time between Korea and Brazil is only about 0.2 seconds.

Chairman Hwang Chang-kyu, appearing via holographic video in Rio de Janeiro, congratulated athlete Jin Jong-oh on "the first-ever three consecutive Olympic gold medals in the history of world shooting," adding, "As a citizen of South Korea and a KT employee, I am grateful and proud." Chairman Hwang also stated, "KT will prepare to ensure that many people can enjoy special experiences, such as holographic live, through 5G pilot services at the 2018 PyeongChang Winter Olympics."
