SK Telecom Joins '5G Collaboration' of Major Global Companies to Discuss Standardization

With 15 major overseas mobile carriers and manufacturers coming together to form a joint cooperation body for 5G standardization, SK Telecom is the only domestic participant, and its leading role in the future international cooperation process for 5G standardization is drawing attention.
SK Telecom announced that it has decided to form a joint cooperation body for 5G standardization with major global mobile carriers such as AT&T, Deutsche Telekom, China Mobile, NTT Docomo, and Vodafone, as well as equipment manufacturers such as Ericsson, Nokia, Samsung, Huawei, Intel, Qualcomm, and LG.
In particular, attention is focused on future developments, as the 3GPP (3rd Generation Partnership Project), an official international standard organization for mobile communications, is expected to set forth the first 5G specifications in 2018, and major mobile carriers and manufacturers around the world have formed a large-scale consultative body for 5G standardization for the first time.

In addition, the 5G consortium plans to discuss the specifications necessary for commercializing actual systems, including interoperability with existing networks such as 4G LTE and initial 5G commercialization system specifications, as well as subsequent technological evolution and upgrades, from the perspective of 5G commercialization system specifications, and to reflect these results in 3GPP.
Regarding 5G standardization, 3GPP began full-scale discussions on core element technologies in 2016 and plans to complete the first set of specifications by 2018 through the establishment of specifications in stages. Once the specifications are finalized by 3GPP, 5G commercialization will begin based on them.
Going forward, SK Telecom plans to engage in active activities, such as proposing specifications, within 5G standardization cooperation bodies, and intends to take the lead in creating a 5G ecosystem by seizing the initiative in 5G standardization.
Prior to this, SK Telecom has been jointly developing 5G-related equipment and elemental technologies with major equipment manufacturers such as Ericsson, Nokia, and Samsung, and has been engaging in 5G-related activities, including signing a partnership with Deutsche Telekom at MWC '16 for cooperation in developing various 5G elemental technologies.
In addition, OPNFV (Open Platform for NFV), an open platform standardization organization, recently launched the End User Advisory Group (EUAG) composed of major global telecommunications operators and manufacturers such as SK Telecom, AT&T, Deutsche Telekom, and China Mobile, and announced plans for open virtualization-based 5G research and development. SK Telecom is the only Korean company to join the OPNFV EUAG and is carrying out foundational work for 5G commercialization and system construction.
Park Jin-hyo, Head of Network Technology at SK Telecom, stated, “Cooperation with global operators and manufacturers is necessary for the successful commercialization of 5G and its mid-to-long-term technological evolution, and discussions and agreements on standards through various partnerships are essential.” He added, “SK Telecom will faithfully fulfill its role as Korea’s leading telecommunications operator regarding 5G pilot services and commercialization, including discussions on 5G standards.”

SKT Signs MoU for Joint 5G Research with Verizon
SK Telecom is moving forward with cooperation with Verizon, the largest U.S. telecommunications carrier, to lead 5G standardization.
