Huawei, together with Leica, conducts research and development in optical systems and digital imaging

Huawei announced that it has expanded its strategic partnership with German luxury camera manufacturer Leica Camera AG by co-establishing the 'Max Berek Innovation Lab'.
Prior to the establishment of this research institute, the two companies announced a long-term technical cooperation in the field of optical engineering last February, and last April, they launched the Huawei P9 and P9 Plus smartphones, the world's first smartphones equipped with Leica dual cameras, which won numerous awards and achieved global success.
The new R&D center, established in Wetzlar, Germany, where Leica's headquarters are located, is expected to foster the development of optical systems and software-based technologies, and further enhance image quality across photography and mobile device applications. In addition, digital imaging, augmented reality, and virtual reality will be included in the research and development fields. Beyond R&D cooperation between the two companies, collaboration with universities and research institutions in Germany and various other countries is also planned.
In particular, this research institute is led by Andreas Kaufmann (Dr., a major shareholder and chairman of the supervisory board of Leica Camera). It was established as part of the future-oriented vision and active support between Dr. Andreas Kaufmann and Huawei Founder and Chairman Ren Zhengfei.

Ren Zhengfei, founder and chairman of Huawei, stated, “With images and video expected to account for more than 90% of future data traffic, the Max Berek Innovation Lab will establish a platform for closer cooperation with Leica to drive the continuous advancement of image and video quality,” adding, “Huawei will deliver greater value to customers through cutting-edge innovation in the smartphone camera market.”

"The Max Berek Innovation Lab provides a historic opportunity to develop industry-leading technologies that combine the resources and vast expertise of both companies."
Meanwhile, this research institute was named in honor of the German-born Max Bereck (1886-1949), the developer of the first Leica lens and a pioneer in the field of microscopes.

Databricks Unveils Open AI Security Monitoring 'Lakewatch'
Databricks entered the security market on March 24 by unveiling LakeWatch, an open-source agentic SIEM. The core functionality of this product is to integrate and analyze security, IT, and business data in a single environment to support AI-based threat detection and investigation.
