KT 5G Center Opens in Pyeongchang, 5G Outpost

KT announced on the 17th that it will open the 'Pyeongchang 5G Center' at the Pyeongchang Alpensia Ski Jumping Center and begin full-scale operation to showcase a successful 5G demonstration service in Pyeongchang in 2018.
The 'Pyeongchang 5G Center' is a communications center that researches and demonstrates 5G technology and will operate until January 2018.
The Pyeongchang 5G Center is equipped with various 5G network equipment and terminals, including base stations and antennas that comply with the '5G-SIG standard' developed by KT in collaboration with global manufacturers.
In addition, various experiential equipment such as Sync View, VR, holograms, and game simulators have been installed to verify new video services, enabling end-to-end research from 5G infrastructure to services.
KT will utilize the 'Pyeongchang 5G Center' to verify the performance of newly developed 5G equipment in a field environment and conduct tests to connect base stations with terminals to ensure optimal wireless quality. In addition, the 'Pyeongchang 5G Center' serves as a forward base for realizing successful 5G pilot services by carrying out national 5G-related projects.
KT announced that in 2018, it plans to provide 5G pilot services expanded beyond the Pyeongchang area to some areas of Seoul to visitors from around the world by linking equipment within the 'Pyeongchang 5G Center', the 5G R&D Center in Umyeon-dong, KT telecommunications offices in the Pyeongchang area, and Olympic facilities.
A forward base for 5G services, including various tests on 5G equipment and national projects
KT Network Division Head Vice President Oh Seong-mok said, “The 5G to be showcased in PyeongChang will not be a simple demonstration but will be provided with high quality at a commercial level,” and “Through the operation of the PyeongChang 5G Center, we will showcase a perfect 5G demonstration service in 2018 and further solidify our 5G technology leadership.”
Meanwhile, at the opening ceremony on that day, PyeongChang Winter Olympics Organizing Committee Facility Manager Kim Sang-pyo, Information and Communication Bureau Director Oh Sang-jin, and key executives from Samsung Electronics, Ericsson, Nokia, Intel, and Qualcomm, who jointly developed the '5G-SIG Standard' with KT, attended and celebrated the opening of the PyeongChang 5G Center.

LG Uplus successfully demonstrates 31 Gbps speeds at a 5G base station for the first time.
LG유플러스는 서울 금천구 독산동 사옥 기술 실험실에서 시험용 5G 기지국을 이용해 현재 이용중인 3밴드 LTE_A 기술보다 100배 이상 빠른 최대 31Gbps의 다운로드 전송 속도를 국내 최초로 시연하는데 성공했다고 밝혔다. LG유플러스의 5G 기지국이 상용화되면 2GB 고화질 영화 1편을 0.5초만에 휴대폰에 내려 받을 수 있게 된다.

SK Telecom First Applies AI-Based Network Operations at Gwanghwamun K-Pop Concert
SK텔레콤이 3월 21일 서울 광화문 일대에서 열린 대형 K-팝 공연에 AI 기반 네트워크 운영 시스템을 처음 적용해 통신 품질을 관리했다고 밝혔다. 공연 전후 3시간 동안 모바일 데이터 사용량은 12.15TB로 직전 주말 같은 시간대보다 약 2배 늘었다. SK텔레콤은 AI 시스템 ‘A-One’을 활용해 5분 단위, 50m 단위로 트래픽을 감시하며 과부하 가능성에 대응했고, 임시 통신 시설과 현장 인력 운영도 병행했다. 밀집 행사와 외국인 이용 수요가 동시에 늘어나는 환경에서 AI 기반 자율 네트워크 운영의 현장 적용 가능성을 확인한 사례로 해석된다.
