60V Synchronous 4-Switch Buck-Boost Controller Launched

Linear Technology Korea (CEO Hong Sa-gwak) announced the launch of a new synchronous buck-boost DC/DC controller (product name: LT8390).

This product can control output voltage and input and output current from input voltages that are higher, lower, or equal to the output voltage. With an input voltage range of 4 V to 60 V and an output voltage range of 0 V to 60 V, it is ideal for voltage regulators, battery chargers, and supercapacitor chargers used in automotive, industrial, and telecommunications systems, as well as battery-powered systems.

The LT8390's 4-switch buck-boost controller, combined with four external N-channel MOSFETs, can deliver from 10W to over 400W of power with efficiencies up to 98%. Its buck-boost capability makes it ideal for automotive applications, where the input voltage can vary dramatically during stop/start, cold crank, and load dump conditions.

Transitions between buck, buck-boost, and boost operating modes are seamless and smooth, providing a well-regulated output even across a wide range of supply voltages. The LT8390 is available in a 28-lead 4mm x 5mm QFN or thermally enhanced TSSOP package, providing a very compact solution footprint.

The LT8390 uses a proprietary peak-buck, peak-boost current mode control scheme that uses a single inductor current sense resistor to provide a smooth transition between buck, boost, and buck-boost regimes. Output voltage is provided with an accuracy of ±1.5%, and output current accuracy is ±3%, ensuring precise constant current regulation. The LT8390 can be programmed to operate at a fixed switching frequency from 150kHz to 650kHz with synchronization.

Alternatively, internal spread spectrum functionality can be used for low EMI. Other features include input or output current monitors, a power good flag, integrated bootstrap diodes with fault reporting, and short-circuit protection.

The LT8390EFE is available in a 28-lead thermally enhanced TSSOP package, and the LT8390EUFD is available in a 28-lead 4mm x 5mm QFN package. Industrial-grade versions, the LT8390IFE and LT8390IUFD, are also available. Pricing starts at $4.65 each in 1,000-piece quantities. All versions are available now.
