KT to Lead 5G Forum for Two Years
Published2017.03.28 18:01KT was selected as the representative chair company at the 5th 5G Forum General Assembly. The 5G Forum is an organization that conducts research and development on core 5G technologies and domestic and international standardization activities. Participants include the three major domestic mobile carriers, manufacturers such as Samsung, LG, and Ericsson-LG, venture companies, and major research institutions such as the Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI).
KT will lead the 5G Forum for two years starting from the 27th. Oh Sung-mok, President of the Network Division, has been appointed as the Chairman of the 5G Forum representing KT. President Oh has been responsible for KT's wired and wireless networks from 2013 to the present and is currently overseeing the '5G pilot service' to be showcased in Pyeongchang in 2018 as the head of the 'Pyeongchang 5G TF'.
As the chair company of the 5G Forum, KT plans to further strengthen cooperation among industry, academia, research institutes, and government to lead South Korea in the upcoming 5G era. We plan to hold various events over the next two years to share cutting-edge technologies and trends related to 5G with domestic and international ICT leaders and discuss ways to build an ecosystem.
Meanwhile, at the 5th 5G Forum Regular General Meeting held from 17:30 on the 27th, in addition to the selection of the chair company, the achievements and results of the 5G Forum's activities in 2016 were announced and plans for activities in 2017 were discussed.
KT Network Division President Oh Seong-mok stated, “5G Forum member companies and the government must strengthen cooperation to achieve the goals of 5G standardization and ecosystem revitalization,” adding, “We will do our utmost to ensure that Korea leads the Fourth Industrial Revolution through the 5G Forum.”

SKT Opens ICT Experience Center for Children in Barcelona
SK Telecom announced the opening of 'T.um Mobile' at Universe Plaza in Montjuïc Park, Barcelona, during MWC 2017, where local children can experience advanced ICT technologies. T.um Mobile is a mobile ICT experience center constructed in the form of a pyramid air dome measuring 400 m² (20X20) and 9 meters in height in the plaza in front of the entrance of the 'YoMO (Youth Mobile Festival)' exhibition hall, which can be described as MWC for children and youth.

KT- 휘닉스중앙평창, 평창동계올림픽 협력 MOU 체결
KT가 ‘휘닉스 평창’(이하 휘닉스)을 운영하는 ‘휘닉스중앙평창’과 2018 평창동계올림픽 사업협력을 위한 MOU를 체결했다. 이번 협약은 휘닉스 내 5G 테스트 네트워크를 포함한 유무선 통신시설 융복합 서비스를 적용하기 위해 진행됐다.

European Patent Applications Surpass 200,000 for the First Time… South Korea Maintains 5th Place, Led by Batteries and Telecommunications
According to the European Patent Office (EPO)'s 'Technology Dashboard 2025', European patent applications last year reached 201,974, surpassing 200,000 for the first time. Korean companies and inventors filed 14,355 applications, representing a 9.5% increase from the previous year and maintaining 5th place by country. Battery, digital communication, and semiconductor technologies led the growth, with Samsung ranking as the top EPO applicant for the second consecutive year and LG reaching 3rd place. The presence of major domestic cities such as Seoul, Suwon, and Yongin was also confirmed. It was also revealed that Korea's European patent strategy is expanding beyond individual technologies to span the entire industry.

SK Telecom First Applies AI-Based Network Operations at Gwanghwamun K-Pop Concert
SK텔레콤이 3월 21일 서울 광화문 일대에서 열린 대형 K-팝 공연에 AI 기반 네트워크 운영 시스템을 처음 적용해 통신 품질을 관리했다고 밝혔다. 공연 전후 3시간 동안 모바일 데이터 사용량은 12.15TB로 직전 주말 같은 시간대보다 약 2배 늘었다. SK텔레콤은 AI 시스템 ‘A-One’을 활용해 5분 단위, 50m 단위로 트래픽을 감시하며 과부하 가능성에 대응했고, 임시 통신 시설과 현장 인력 운영도 병행했다. 밀집 행사와 외국인 이용 수요가 동시에 늘어나는 환경에서 AI 기반 자율 네트워크 운영의 현장 적용 가능성을 확인한 사례로 해석된다.
