Silicon wafer shipments in the first quarter continued to increase following the previous quarter.
According to the global wafer industry quarterly report by the Semiconductor Equipment and Materials International (SEMI), silicon wafer shipments in the first quarter of this year rose 3.4% compared to the fourth quarter of 2016.
Silicon area shipments in the first quarter of 2017 totaled 2.858 billion square inches, compared to 2.764 billion square inches in the fourth quarter of last year. Shipments in the first quarter increased by 12.6% compared to the same period in 2016, setting a record high for quarterly figures.
"Global silicon wafer shipments in the first quarter usually show seasonal growth," said Chungwei Lee, Chairman of SEMI's Silicon Manufacturers Group (SMG) and VP of Global Wafer. "The sustained increase in shipments, which broke the record of the last quarter, should also be viewed as breaking an exceptional record."
Silicon wafers are the fundamental material for semiconductors and are core components of almost all electronic devices, including computers, communication products, and home appliances. These thin, circular disc-shaped silicon wafers, which require advanced technology, are manufactured in various sizes (diameters ranging from 1 inch to 12 inches) and are used as substrate materials for the fabrication of most semiconductor devices and chips.

국제반도체장비재료협인 SEMI가 최근 발표한 전세계 웨이퍼 산업분기 보고서에 지난 2분기와 비교해 3분기 실리콘 웨이퍼 출하량이 증가했다고 발표했다. 3분기 동안 실리콘 면적 출하량은 총 27억 3000만 제곱인치로 지난 2분기 27억 600만 제곱인치보다 0.9% 상승했다. 이는 지난해 3분기 출하량기록보다 5.4% 높은 수치이다. 이 수치는 웨이퍼 제조업체들이 생산하여 출하하는 폴리시드(polished) 실리콘 웨이퍼 및 에피택셜(epitaxial) 실리콘 웨이퍼를 포함한다.하지만 논폴리시드(Non-Polished)웨이퍼 및 재생(reclaimed) 웨이퍼는 포함하지 않는다.

대세로 가는 3 낸드, 적층 문제 해결할 공정과 소재 찾아라
올해 3D 낸드(NAND)의 공급 물량이 2D 낸드를 넘어설 것으로 예상되는 가운데, 3D 낸드를 적층하기 위한 공정과 소재에 대한 관심이 커지고 있다. 지난 18일 국제반도체장비재료협회 주최로 열린 반도체 전자재료 기술 컨퍼런스(SMC, Strategic Materials Conference)는 “Scaling Challenges-The Future of Materials”라는 주제로 차세대 메모리를 위한 반도체 소재 도전과제, 반도체 소재 시장 전망, 주요 공정 재료 기술, D램 전망 등에 대한 이야기를 나누었다. 발표자로 나선 램리서치 코라아의 홍성현 전무는 3D 낸드가 적층되면서 생기는 문제점에 대해 “층수가 늘어나면서 높이가 굉장히 높아지게 된다. 구성이 조화롭게 되지 않으면 스트레스 변화가 심해진다. 스트레가 심해지면 웨이퍼가 휘어져 다른 공정에서 핸들링이 어렵다”고 말했다.
