The Three Telecom Operators Compete Fiercely to Secure Home IoT Partners

SK pushes Smart Home, KT promotes GiGA IoT, and LG advances IoT@home as the three companies compete actively in the home IoT market.
SK Telecom is expanding partnerships while building an IoT network based on the artificial intelligence speaker 'Nugu' and 'LoRa'. Following 17 construction companies including HDC Hyundai Industrial Construction, LH Corporation, and SK Construction in May, SK Telecom announced it has signed a contract with Woosung Kunyoung, an officetel specialist, to provide 'Nugu' and IoT-based smart home services in officetels.
The key aspect is connecting the apartments under contract with SK Telecom's 'Smart Home' service including in-home lighting, heating, gas shutoff devices, door/window open sensors, and standby power cutoff outlets, and providing these to residents. All provided devices can be operated by voice through artificial intelligence devices, and when residents purchase linked devices such as air conditioners, air purifiers, and robot vacuum cleaners, they can be controlled via voice and the smart home app. Officetels come with a home service package suitable for single-person households, with 'Nugu', lighting, smart plugs, SOS buttons, and door/window open sensors pre-installed as standard.
KT announced on the 9th that through a contract with Daewon Plus R&D, it will apply home IoT to officetels as well. The company will introduce GiGA IoT home plugs and door/window open sensors in 646 units of Incheon Yeongjong Seaside Park Residences scheduled for move-in in 2019. Voice control will be available through the Home IoT GiGA Genie, and home network services such as in-unit heating control, elevator call, and vehicle entry notification will be provided.
In May, KT will focus on artificial intelligence API development and build a home network environment to be applied to the residences. In March, the company signed partnership agreements with construction companies including KT Estate, Daelim Construction, and Hanwha Construction.
LG U+ will cooperate with Hoban Construction to build a home IoT platform in 824 units of 'Pohang Chokok Hoban Verudium' in the Chokok district, northern Pohang by June, and will also install outdoor IoT air quality measurement devices.
Residents will be able to check air quality measurements through the IoT@home app. In addition, upon move-in, wired-based existing built-in systems such as lighting, cooling and heating, gas, and fire detection installed in the units, as well as IoT home appliances from LG Electronics, Samsung Electronics, and other manufacturers purchased separately, can be integrated and controlled. LG U+ is building active partnerships with air quality specialist Heimpel, bidet specialist Nobita, small appliance manufacturer Shinil Industries, Cuckoo Electronics, Seonil Safe, and others, establishing extensive cooperative relationships in the IoT field.
Kwon Young-soo, Vice Chairman of LG U+, stated, "Construction companies have shown very high interest in LG U+'s differentiated home IoT platform, which has secured the largest number of partners in Korea. The significance lies not simply in increasing the number of partner construction companies, but in establishing a foundation that enables residents to receive LG U+'s differentiated home IoT services."

LG Uplus Controls Small Home Appliances via IoT
LG U+ announced on the 18th that it will apply IoT technology to all small home appliances manufactured by Shinil Industries, a comprehensive home appliance company. LG U+ and Shinil Industries signed a business agreement at LG U+ headquarters and decided to begin development by integrating LG U+ IoT technology into summer appliances such as fans, air circulators, and dehumidifiers manufactured by Shinil Industries, as well as winter appliances including heaters, electric heating pads, and hot air blowers, and environmental appliances such as water purifiers. All products from Shinil Industries will be interoperable with 'IoT@home,' LG U+'s home IoT platform app, and IoT products are scheduled to be launched starting with winter appliances by the end of this year. Once the IoT products are launched, users will be able to control small home appliances in their homes through smartphones. For example, in the case of a fan used during summer, users can adjust wind speed, wind direction, and timer through an app or simple voice commands without needing a separate remote control, even while lying down. Users can also pre-input operation schedules in the app before bedtime, such as controlling fan speed and direction on an hourly basis. Moreover, if a user leaves home with a fan turned on, IoT sensors such as opening detectors will sense the away status and send app push notifications to the user, enabling remote control of home appliances from anywhere at any time. In particular, LG U+ plans to pursue sleep sensors that automatically adjust temperature by recognizing the user's sleep state and promote sleep based on big data. An Sung-jun, Head of IoT Business at LG U+, stated, "Starting with our cooperation with Shinil Industries, we plan to rapidly expand IoT services by integrating them into small home appliance products" and "We will introduce services that innovate customer experience through various devices linked to our home IoT platform."

LG Uplus, NB-IoT-based Solar Power Monitoring in Ulsan
LG Uplus announced on the 24th (Wednesday) that it has signed a business agreement for the 'Green Village creation' project with the Ulsan Nam-gu Office and the Busan·Ulsan Regional Headquarters of the Korea Energy Agency through the establishment of a solar power generation monitoring system based on NB-IoT (Narrowband Internet of Things) network. The application of NB-IoT technology to a solar power generation system is the first case in Korea. LG Uplus plans to commence full-scale system construction work starting from the end of June, when the completion of NB-IoT dedicated network construction in the Ulsan region is finalized. According to this agreement, LG Uplus will connect inverters equipped with NB-IoT communication modules to the solar power collection panels installed by the Ulsan Nam-gu Office in approximately 500 households in 'Samho Migratory Bird Village.' The company will remotely transmit solar power generation data collected from the devices to the IoT platform server through its NB-IoT dedicated network.

LG Uplus announced the launch of 'Smart Russel UP,' a home interior safe that combines IoT technology with Seonil Safe, a safe manufacturing company (CEO Kim Young-sook). 'Smart Russel UP' IoT safe, jointly unveiled by LG Uplus and Seonil Safe, is equipped with WiFi communication functionality. It is characterized by real-time integration with the 'IoT@home' app, allowing users to receive safe status notifications via smartphone from outside.
