LG Electronics’ swift moves to drastically reorganize its structure for artificial intelligence
Published2017.06.12 11:18LG Electronics has carried out an organizational restructuring to significantly strengthen its research and development capabilities related to artificial intelligence in order to lead the era of the Fourth Industrial Revolution.
LG Electronics established the 'Artificial Intelligence Research Institute' and the 'Robot Advanced Research Institute' in the CTO (Chief Technology Officer) division as of June 1. The 'Intelligence Research Institute,' which has been researching speech recognition, image recognition, and sensor recognition, has been expanded and reorganized by separating it into the 'Artificial Intelligence Research Institute' dedicated to artificial intelligence and the 'Robot Advanced Research Institute' dedicated to robots.
The 'AI Research Institute' plans to build an AI platform that recognizes, infers, and learns from various data, such as customer product usage information and weather, using voice, video, and sensors, and apply it to all of the company's businesses, including smart home appliances, mobile devices, TVs, automotive parts, and robots.
The 'Artificial Intelligence Research Institute', formerly located in the 'Convergence Center', has moved under the 'Software Center', which leads the development of enterprise software platforms such as webOS, and will focus on advancing deep learning-based artificial intelligence platforms and laying the foundation for business expansion.
The 'Robot Advanced Research Institute' develops advanced technologies for intelligent robots within the 'Convergence Center'.
Since the beginning of this year, LG Electronics has introduced 'DeepThinQ™' smart home appliances equipped with deep learning technology and is collaborating with Incheon International Airport Corporation to commercialize airport guide robots and airport cleaning robots. Recently, we have been pursuing open innovation in collaboration with the wearable robot startup SG Robotics.
LG Electronics President and CTO Ahn Seung-kwon emphasized, “We will integrate core technologies of the Fourth Industrial Revolution, such as artificial intelligence, big data, and IoT, with our existing businesses to evolve into a new business paradigm.”

LG이노텍, U-20 월드컵 결승전 10만개 LED로 경기장 밝힌다
LG이노텍은 오는 11일 ‘FIFA U-20 월드컵 코리아 2017’ 결승 경기가 열리는 수원월드컵경기장의 메인 조명에 이 회사 10와트(W) 하이파워 LED가 적용됐다고 밝혔다. 하이파워 LED는 1W 이상의 높은 소비전력으로 밝은 빛을 내는 고출력 광원이다. 밤에도 낮처럼 환히 밝힐 수 있어 주로 스포츠 경기장, 도로, 공장 등에서 사용된다. 특히 스포츠 조명용 LED는 경기 진행과 방송에 차질이 없도록 높은 품질 신뢰성이 요구된다. LG이노텍은 독자적인 고출력 수직칩 기술로 고신뢰성 하이파워 LED를 개발했다. 이 제품은 최고 출력 10W로 10만 시간 동안 작동시켜도 스포츠 경기장을 밝히는 데 문제가 없다. 여기에 국내 조명회사 KMW의 조명 설계 기술이 더해져 수원월드컵경기장 메인 조명으로 설치됐다.
