KT and Advantech Korea Launch LTE-M Based IoT Gateway 'UBC-222'

KT announced on the 16th that it has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Advantech Korea to launch an LTE-M gateway and to cooperate on the development of the industrial IoT market.

This business agreement aims to launch Advantech's 'UBC-222' IoT gateway, developed based on LTE-M, and jointly pioneer the Internet of Things (IoT) B2B market.

KT and Advantech Korea conducted several months of field tests and terminal verification tests to ensure communication quality comparable to existing mobile phones for the launch of the 'UBC-222,' which is equipped with KT LTE-M communication capabilities. In particular, the 'UBC-222' comes standard with integration capabilities with KT's IoT platform, 'IoTMakers,' enabling the implementation of IoT services ranging from connecting IoT devices to collecting information and monitoring.


Both companies plan to extensively utilize 'UBC-222' in various fields, including smart cities, smart environments, service industries, and factory automation. The LTE-M network, which ensures nationwide coverage and excellent communication quality, is suitable for applications requiring real-time control, such as industrial asset management, condition-based monitoring, and predictive maintenance. In particular, LTE-M guarantees higher uplink and downlink speeds compared to LoRa, offering the advantage of accommodating a larger volume of data generated in various industrial environments.

Lee Kwang-wook, Senior Vice President of KT’s IoT Business Strategy, stated, “The development of this LTE-M-based IoT gateway will serve as a solution to resolve the issues of unlicensed band communication methods currently used in industrial settings, which are prone to interference,” adding, “We will make further efforts to develop the IoT market in the industrial sector through our cooperation with Advantech.”
