Can artificial intelligence distinguish real news from fake news?
The Ministry of Science, ICT and Future Planning is promoting the '2017 Artificial Intelligence R&D Challenge' to utilize artificial intelligence technology to solve pressing social issues and maximize economic and social ripple effects.
The theme of this year's inaugural R&D competition was chosen as "Finding Fake News." The recent proliferation of fake news—stories created with the intent to deceive—has become a global problem, fueling social unrest and social media disruption.
Considering the lowering of barriers to AI research due to the promotion of open research such as open source, this competition plans to allow participation by anyone, including companies, universities, research institutes, university students, and the general public.
Teams selected as outstanding researchers through the competition will receive awards and support for follow-up research on "fake news." From July to December, participating teams will identify "fake news" without government funding. We plan to conduct preliminary research aimed at determining the consistency of news titles and content and detecting content that is out of context within the news text, and select the best team through an open competition-style evaluation in December.
Kim Jeong-won, deputy director of the Intelligent Information Society Promotion Team at the Ministry of the Future, emphasized, “We will continue to identify challenges to maximize the economic and social effects of artificial intelligence and seek technological solutions through the AI R&D Challenge.”

[Discussion] Artificial Intelligence Will Eliminate Jobs? Instead, It Will Increase Jobs
While the outlook that artificial intelligence will replace human jobs is prevalent, attention has been drawn to the view that jobs will actually increase. Experts gathered at the Artificial Intelligence New Industry Convergence Forum held at Pangyo Startup Campus reached consensus that the number of jobs created by industrial development utilizing artificial intelligence will exceed the number of jobs lost. Lee Seung-min, a researcher at the Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute of Korea, stated, "The job issue related to artificial intelligence needs to be viewed objectively. When the Internet emerged, for every 1 job lost, 2.6 new jobs were created," and added, "According to recent reports, when the data-centric artificial intelligence era arrives, for every 1 job created in data-related fields, 3 jobs are created in the BICT (biotechnology and information and communications technology) sector."

If we have to accept decisions made by artificial intelligence (AI), it has been found that people show the most trust in the medical field, while on the other hand expressing considerable concerns about 'safety' that judges humans as animals or enemies. According to a recent artificial intelligence survey conducted by this publication (What Do You Think About AI, Which One Called Forth), when asked in which case they could place the most trust if they had to accept AI decisions, 36.8% of respondents concentrated on the medical field (disease diagnosis and prescription). This was followed by investment-related stock finance at 22.8%, autonomous vehicles at 21%, and legal court rulings at 19.3%.
