Samsung Electronics to Establish Medical Mobile Virtual Reality Business

Samsung Electronics, Yonsei University College of Medicine Gangnam Severance Hospital, and F&I Co., Ltd., a company specializing in virtual reality content production, have agreed to jointly develop virtual reality-based healthcare technology.
Through this business partnership, the three companies plan to jointly research mental health management technology and develop a medical mobile virtual reality business model to seek the establishment of a new medical IT convergence infrastructure.
A mobile virtual reality-based medical program is scheduled to be researched by utilizing Samsung Electronics’ virtual reality headset ‘Gear VR’, F&I’s VR content development technology, and the vast medical data of Gangnam Severance Hospital, Yonsei University College of Medicine.
In particular, we plan to develop professional and systematic medical programs for mental health, including research on cognitive behavioral therapy for the diagnosis and prevention of suicide risk, psychological assessment and education/training, and psychological diagnosis and treatment.
The products under development include a diagnostic kit and chair that analyze psychological states using VR, a VR mental health program (application) encompassing psychological assessment to education and training processes, and an artificial intelligence diagnostic system; through these, an integrated service platform for the diagnosis and treatment of suicide risk will be established.
Samsung Electronics provides optimized technologies and services to build an integrated infrastructure by utilizing not only 'Gear VR' but also 'Gear S3', 'S Health', and 'Bixby' at each stage.
This agreement The virtual reality-based healthcare service being developed through this initiative is scheduled for commercialization in 2018, and its use is expected to expand not only among B2B clients such as hospitals, local governments, dementia centers, and schools, but also among general households.
"A Samsung Electronics official stated, 'Recently, the adoption of virtual reality convergence technology is expanding across various fields, and the smart healthcare market utilizing virtual reality technology is also gaining attention in the medical sector.' He added, 'Going forward, we plan to expand collaboration with specialized companies in each field to develop VR-based services and expand infrastructure, centering on 'Gear VR'.'"
"Kim Jae-jin, Vice President of Medical Affairs at Gangnam Severance Hospital, Yonsei University College of Medicine, said, 'Gangnam Severance Hospital has been operating a virtual reality clinic since 2005 and is presenting new alternatives for various psychological treatments and education through medical technology utilizing virtual reality.' He added, 'We expect that this agreement will enable us to develop more specialized psychological treatment and prevention programs and provide more sophisticated medical services.'"
