Samsung Unveils Mixed Reality Headset 'Odyssey'

Samsung Electronics unveiled the premium mixed reality (MR) headset 'Samsung HMD Odyssey' in collaboration with Microsoft.
The Samsung HMD Odyssey provides users with a new experience as a PC that supports the new Windows 10 OS, which will be updated in October.
It is equipped with two 3.5-inch AMOLED displays that support the industry's highest resolution and offers a 110-degree viewing angle, allowing you to vividly enjoy games or 360-degree video content.
In particular, Harman's premium audio brand, AKG headphones, enhanced the immersive experience. The built-in microphone supports real-time communication through voice chat applications.
Unlike existing HMDs, the Samsung HMD Odyssey can be used immediately simply by connecting it to a PC without the need for a complex installation process, and allows for easy and convenient game control by linking it with a 6 Degrees of Freedom (6 DOF) motion controller.
In addition, the 'Samsung HMD Odyssey' features an ergonomic design that ensures comfort even during prolonged use, and allows users to customize it to their individual field of vision by adjusting the Inter-Pupillary Distance (IPD) wheel.
Choi Young-kyu, Executive Vice President of Samsung Electronics’ PC Business Team, stated, “Samsung Electronics is striving to provide unique value and experiences to consumers’ lives through meaningful innovation,” adding, “The ‘Samsung HMD Odyssey,’ equipped with top-tier specifications, will lead consumers to a higher level of mixed reality experience.”
The 'Samsung HMD Odyssey' is scheduled to be released sequentially starting in early November in Korea, the United States, China, Brazil, Hong Kong, and other regions.

“제4차 산업혁명은 혼합현실(MR)과 뉴미디어가 혼합된 형태가 될 것이다” 4차산업혁명과 기술의 증강현실과 공존현실을 주제로 한 토론회가 지난 23일 열렸다. 이날 토론회는 한국과학기술연구원(KIST)의 유범재 책임연구원과 과학동아의 윤신영 편집장이 발표와 토론으로 진행됐다. 유범재 책임은 뉴미디어에 대해 실감을 교류하고 인체 감응을 통한 확장된 공간인 공존공간(Coiexstence space)이라고 설명했다. ‘현실-가상-원격공간’이 하나의 공간이 된다. 사용자는 아바타나 스마트 기기를 통해 타인과 실감 교류와 인체 감응하며 공간을 확장한다. 그가 공존공간을 연구하게 된 계기는 스마트폰 시장이 빠르게 자리 잡은 이유와 같다. 1인 가구는 늘어나고 있지만, 사람들과 소통하는 SNS는 점점 확산하는 ‘나 홀로 또 같이’의 가치관이 제2의 스마트폰 시장을 이끌어 간다는 것. 올해 초 페이스북이 발표한 Social VR을 보면, 참여자가 오큘러스 HMD를 착용하고 가상 공간에서 카드 게임이나 칼싸움을 한다. 지난 21일(수)에는 구글이 ‘구글 글래스’ 출시 3년 만에 블루투스 기능을 지원하는 업데이트 ‘XE23’을 발표했다. 이는 페이스북과 구글이 공존현실에 연구를 진행하고 있음을 알 수 있는 대목이다.

Korea Virtual Reality Launches High-Definition VR Rendering Program Supporting HMDs
산업용 VR 전문기업, 한국가상현실(대표이사 장호현)이 VR 렌더링 프로그램 ‘코비하이렌더(KOVI High Render, KHR)’를 출시한다고 밝혔다. 코비하이렌더(이하 KHR)는 SaaS(Software as a Service) 방식으로 서비스하는 코비온라인의 VR 인테리어 설계 프로그램인 ‘코비아키’로 설계한 공간을 고퀄리티의 화질로 실시간 렌더링하여 게임처럼 돌아다닐 수 있게 하는 VR 렌더링 프로그램이다. 특히 기존 설계 프로그램은 고화질 렌더링에 많은 시간이 소요되었지만 ‘코비하이렌더’는 10초 내에 고품질 결과물을 확인할 수 있다.

VR: A New Growth Engine: Finding Leaders
과학기술정보통신부는 4차 산업혁명의 신성장동력인 가상현실(VR)산업을 선도할 콘텐츠 개발자와 기업 발굴을 위해 추진한 그랜드 챌린지에서 우수한 성과를 거둔 개인?팀을 시상하는 ‘VR어워드’를 9월 20일 서울 상암 누리꿈스퀘어에서 개최했다. 지난해에 이어 2회를 맞이한 그랜드챌린지는 학생부와 일반부로 구성되어있으며, 각각 EDPI-VR팀의 ‘Body Adventure’와 서커스컴퍼니팀의 ‘매직 알(AR)박스’가 과기정통부 장관상을 수상했다. 과기정통부는 출품 콘텐츠의 완성도를 높이기 위해 3개월간의 사전개발 기간을 두었다. 롯데월드, 쓰리디팩토리, 스코넥 등 여러 기업이 멘토(mentor)로 참여해 HMD(Head Mounted Display) 등의 장치, 서버와 같은 인프라와 기술코칭을 지원했다. 또한, 참가자들의 원활한 개발을 위해 누리꿈스퀘어 내에 개발 공간을 제공했다.
