KT Unveils 5G Commercialization Plans at 'Qualcomm 4G & 5G Summit'

The Qualcomm 4G/5G Summit, hosted by Qualcomm, the world's largest manufacturer of communication integrated circuits, is an event where leading companies in the wireless communication sector, including global telecommunications operators and manufacturers of telecommunications equipment, terminals, and components, participate to present and discuss the future development direction of the telecommunications industry and the latest technology trends.
On the 17th, the second day of the Qualcomm 4G/5G Summit, KT gave a keynote speech session as a representative of a telecommunications operator preparing for 5G commercialization, discussing the necessity of 5G and how it will transform the telecommunications industry under the theme "5G Closer Than Ever Before to Bring 5G into Reality."
At the event, KT emphasized, “5G, characterized by ultra-high speed, ultra-connectivity, and ultra-low latency, is essential to meet the requirements of various new services based on wireless communication, such as autonomous driving, connected cars, and telemedicine,” adding, “The early establishment of the ecosystem is absolutely necessary to accelerate the revolutionary development that 5G will bring.”
In addition, KT introduced the 5G technologies and services to be showcased at PyeongChang in 2018, presenting its unique 5G strategy to realize 5G commercialization in 2019 based on the world's first 5G pilot service. Revealed a vision for commercialization.
At the 2017 Qualcomm 4G/5G Summit, global telecommunications operators including NTT Docomo, China Mobile, and Telefónica, in addition to KT, are participating to present hardware and software technologies related to 5G standard specifications such as millimeter wave, as well as IoT technologies utilizing 5G. Additionally, a 5G Expo event was held concurrently, featuring manufacturers leading the 5G technology ecosystem, including Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics.

KT launches narrowband IoT-based location notification tag
KT announced that it will launch 'Connect Tag', a peace-of-mind smart location notification service based on Samsung Electronics' NB-IoT (Narrow Band IoT) network, within October. Following the commercialization of its nationwide NB-IoT network in July, KT will exclusively launch the 'Connect Tag'. The key feature is that it enables stable and prolonged service use by utilizing low power consumption and small data capacity. Additionally, by linking with GPS and WPS (Wi-Fi-based positioning), users can identify more accurate locations both indoors and outdoors. The 'Connect Tag' can be widely utilized in various location information-based services including child safety check-in, pet location tracking, personal asset location tracking, and travel luggage location monitoring.

European Patent Applications Surpass 200,000 for the First Time… South Korea Maintains 5th Place, Led by Batteries and Telecommunications
According to the European Patent Office (EPO)'s 'Technology Dashboard 2025', European patent applications last year reached 201,974, surpassing 200,000 for the first time. Korean companies and inventors filed 14,355 applications, representing a 9.5% increase from the previous year and maintaining 5th place by country. Battery, digital communication, and semiconductor technologies led the growth, with Samsung ranking as the top EPO applicant for the second consecutive year and LG reaching 3rd place. The presence of major domestic cities such as Seoul, Suwon, and Yongin was also confirmed. It was also revealed that Korea's European patent strategy is expanding beyond individual technologies to span the entire industry.

SK Telecom First Applies AI-Based Network Operations at Gwanghwamun K-Pop Concert
SK텔레콤이 3월 21일 서울 광화문 일대에서 열린 대형 K-팝 공연에 AI 기반 네트워크 운영 시스템을 처음 적용해 통신 품질을 관리했다고 밝혔다. 공연 전후 3시간 동안 모바일 데이터 사용량은 12.15TB로 직전 주말 같은 시간대보다 약 2배 늘었다. SK텔레콤은 AI 시스템 ‘A-One’을 활용해 5분 단위, 50m 단위로 트래픽을 감시하며 과부하 가능성에 대응했고, 임시 통신 시설과 현장 인력 운영도 병행했다. 밀집 행사와 외국인 이용 수요가 동시에 늘어나는 환경에서 AI 기반 자율 네트워크 운영의 현장 적용 가능성을 확인한 사례로 해석된다.
