KT, World's First Interconnection with 5G Network and Device
Published2017.10.27 14:33KT announced that it succeeded in connecting KT’s 5G pilot network with Samsung Electronics’ 5G terminals compliant with the ‘Pyeongchang 5G standard’ at the opening and closing ceremony venues and major stadiums of the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics.
In addition, KT successfully conducted a '5G service demonstration' by connecting its completed 5G pilot network with a Samsung Electronics 5G terminal compliant with the 'Pyeongchang 5G Standard' to transmit large-capacity video. This marks the first time that an actual terminal, rather than test equipment, has been connected to a 5G network to deliver a service.
The 5G terminal used by KT and Samsung Electronics for the 5G service demonstration is in the form of a tablet PC, capable of providing basic functions of existing smart terminals and ultra-high-speed wireless data communication through 5G connection. In addition, this terminal is equipped with 5G-4G (LTE) multi-RAT interworking capabilities, allowing users to switch between 4G and 5G networks and use ultra-high-speed data communication services.
KT stated that it has been conducting interoperability tests with Samsung Electronics at the Umeon-dong 5G R&D Center and the Pyeongchang 5G Center for the past several months to deliver services by connecting 5G terminals to the 5G pilot network established in Pyeongchang, and assessed that technology development for 5G commercialization has reached its final stage as the 5G network, terminals, and services have all successfully interoperated.
"Introducing the world's first 5G network at the 2018 PyeongChang Winter Olympics, which is attracting the attention of people worldwide, was made possible thanks to the technological capabilities and leading investments Korea has accumulated in the ICT sector," said Oh Sung-mok, President of KT Network Division. "We aim to provide the highest level of stable Olympic communication services as well as showcase a variety of 5G services that will amaze the world, and we will make even more thorough preparations during the remaining period."

KT-Smartro Launches Wireless Network Credit Card Payment Terminal
KT announced that it has launched a "fixed wireless credit card payment terminal" based on LTE-M network with nationwide commercialized coverage in collaboration with its subsidiary Smartro. The fixed wireless credit card payment terminal applies an LTE-M based wireless network with secured nationwide coverage and quality, rather than the existing wired network method, offering faster payment processing speed compared to telephone lines (PSTN) and lower costs compared to internet line usage environments.

KT to Showcase Next-Generation Gigawire Capable of 1Gbps Speed at BBWF
KT는 24일부터 3일간 독일 베를린에서 열리는 브로드밴드월드 포럼(Broadband World Forum, 이하 BBWF)에 참가해, 일반 구리선에서도 상하향 1Gbps 속도의 기가인터넷 제공이 가능한 ‘기가와이어(GiGA Wire) 솔루션’을 선보였다고 밝혔다. BBWF는 전세계 주요 통신사 및 제조사들이 대거 참가하여 차세대 네트워크 방향을 논의하는 세계 최대 규모의 유선통신 전시회이다. KT는 2016년에 이어 올해도 BBWF 전시에 참여함으로써, 구내배선 대부분이 구리선으로 되어있어 기가와이어 기술이 적합한 유럽시장을 지속 공략했다. 이번 BBWF 행사에서 KT는 ▲가입자의 상하향 트래픽 양에 따라 기가와이어의 품질을 최적화 시키는 ‘클라우드 벡터 부스트(Cloud Vector Boost)’ ▲빌라 및 소형아파트와 같이 소규모 설치에 최적화된 기가와이어 시스템인 ‘슬림형 기가와이어’ ▲기존 동축케이블을 사용하여 1Gbps의 기가인터넷이 가능한 시스템인 ‘기가와이어 코액스(GiGA Wire Coax)’와 같이 기존 기가와이어 기술에서 발전된 다양한 형태의 응용 시스템을 글로벌 시장에 선보였다.

SK Telecom First Applies AI-Based Network Operations at Gwanghwamun K-Pop Concert
SK텔레콤이 3월 21일 서울 광화문 일대에서 열린 대형 K-팝 공연에 AI 기반 네트워크 운영 시스템을 처음 적용해 통신 품질을 관리했다고 밝혔다. 공연 전후 3시간 동안 모바일 데이터 사용량은 12.15TB로 직전 주말 같은 시간대보다 약 2배 늘었다. SK텔레콤은 AI 시스템 ‘A-One’을 활용해 5분 단위, 50m 단위로 트래픽을 감시하며 과부하 가능성에 대응했고, 임시 통신 시설과 현장 인력 운영도 병행했다. 밀집 행사와 외국인 이용 수요가 동시에 늘어나는 환경에서 AI 기반 자율 네트워크 운영의 현장 적용 가능성을 확인한 사례로 해석된다.
