KT's 5G Technology Recognized Globally
Published2017.11.03 10:50KT announced that it won the 'Advancing the road to 5G' and 'Fixed Network Evolution' awards at the 'Global Telecoms Awards 2017' held at 8 Northumberland Avenue in London, UK.
The 'Global Telecoms Awards,' now in its fifth year, is a prestigious global award organized by Informa, a global ICT research institute. It annually selects companies that have achieved the most outstanding performance and innovation among telecommunications operators worldwide, covering not only telecommunications and network technology but also media and marketing.
KT received global recognition for its efforts in 5G international standardization by winning the '5G Leading Operator Award' at the Global Telecoms Awards 2017. KT presented its 5G vision to the world stage by announcing that it would showcase the world's first 5G pilot service at MWC 2015 (Mobile World Congress 2015).
Since then, we have actively participated in international 5G standardization organizations such as 3GPP and NGMN to develop 5G standard specifications, and formed a 5G Special Interest Group (SIG) to discuss common specifications for PyeongChang 5G services with global manufacturers.
As a result of these achievements, KT completed the world's first common 5G standard, the 'Pyeongchang 5G Standard,' in June of last year and unveiled it in October; furthermore, in January 2017, KT's 5G service was adopted in the draft of the ITU 5G international standard. In addition, last October, the company successfully integrated 5G networks with 5G terminal services and plans to launch a full-scale 5G pilot service in Pyeongchang in February 2018.
KT GiGA Wire 2.0, which won the 'Wired Network Innovation Award,' is a technology that utilizes telephone lines to provide speeds of up to 1Gbps—comparable to LAN and optical cables—in areas previously classified as GiGA Internet dead zones. Following the commercialization of 500Mbps in 2014, it was commercialized for the first time in the world in December 2016.
Currently, GiGA Wire technology is being applied to apartment complexes and older buildings where it is difficult to access optical infrastructure, providing benefits to approximately 33,000 subscribers (as of June 2017). In 2016, GiGA Wire equipment was exported to Spain and Turkey, and a pilot network was established in Boston, USA this year. European countries with many historical sites that provide internet through existing telephone lines, as well as Asian countries with weak infrastructure investment, are showing great interest in GiGA Wire technology.

KT announced that on a consolidated basis, it recorded revenue of 5.8266 trillion won and operating profit of 377.3 billion won for the third quarter of 2017. Total wireless subscribers increased by approximately 274,000 from the previous quarter as secondary device and Internet of Things (IoT) service subscribers steadily grew. However, wireless service revenue stood at 1.6634 trillion won, a 0.7% decrease from the same period last year, which was due to the exclusion of device insurance services and other items from revenue following changes in accounting treatment standards.

KT텔레캅, 플랫폼 기반 보안서비스로 보안 시장 판 바꾼다
KT의 보안전문기업 KT텔레캅은 서울 광화문 KT스퀘어에서 기자간담회를 열고, 기존 보안시스템의 구조를 혁신한 ‘세계최초 플랫폼 기반의 보안서비스’를 선보였다. 플랫폼 기반의 보안서비스는 KT텔레캅의 관제?출동 역량에 KT그룹의 ICT 기술을 접목한 새로운 비즈니스 모델로, 고객시설 내 모든 센서를 관리하고 A/S 등을 수행하는 메인 컨트롤러인 하드웨어 주장치를 클라우드화 한 시스템이다. 이 시스템은 LTE-M, NB-IoT 통신망을 이용해 각각의 보안?IoT 센서들이 직접 클라우드 주장치와 통신하는 방식이다. 클라우드 주장치는 각각 센서들의 신호를 받아 관제시스템에 전송하고, 이상신호 감지 시 출동대원이 긴급 출동해 상황에 대처한다. 현재 LTE-M 통신 기반으로 빌딩 등 대형 사업자를 대상으로 서비스를 출시했으며, 내년 초 NB-IoT 통신 기반의 서비스를 일반/소호 고객 대상으로 선보일 예정이다.

이통 3사, 아이폰8 정식 출시 행사 열어
3일 ‘아이폰8’ 시리즈가 출시되면서 SK텔레콤, KT, LG유플러스는 출시 행사를 개최했다. 이번 아이폰8 사전 예약 고객 분석 결과 20대 고객이 사전예약 고객 중 55%를 차지했다. 특히 10대 후반에서 20대 초반의 ‘1724 고객’의 신청 비율이 전체 25%로 나타나 아이폰에 대한 젊은 층의 높은 관심을 보여줬다.

European Patent Applications Surpass 200,000 for the First Time… South Korea Maintains 5th Place, Led by Batteries and Telecommunications
According to the European Patent Office (EPO)'s 'Technology Dashboard 2025', European patent applications last year reached 201,974, surpassing 200,000 for the first time. Korean companies and inventors filed 14,355 applications, representing a 9.5% increase from the previous year and maintaining 5th place by country. Battery, digital communication, and semiconductor technologies led the growth, with Samsung ranking as the top EPO applicant for the second consecutive year and LG reaching 3rd place. The presence of major domestic cities such as Seoul, Suwon, and Yongin was also confirmed. It was also revealed that Korea's European patent strategy is expanding beyond individual technologies to span the entire industry.

SK Telecom First Applies AI-Based Network Operations at Gwanghwamun K-Pop Concert
SK Telecom announced that it applied an AI-based network operation system for the first time at a large-scale K-pop concert held in the Gwanghwamun area of Seoul on March 21st, managing communication quality throughout the event. Mobile data usage during the three hours before and after the concert reached 12.15TB, approximately doubling compared to the same time slot the previous weekend. SK Telecom monitored traffic using the AI system 'A-One' in five-minute and 50-meter units to respond to potential overload situations, while also operating temporary communication facilities and on-site personnel in parallel. This case is interpreted as confirmation of the practical applicability of AI-based autonomous network operation in an environment where demand from dense events and foreign users increases simultaneously.
