KT, Pyeongchang 5G Network-Japan 4G Network Data Roaming

KT announced that it has successfully demonstrated data roaming between the Pyeongchang 5G pilot network and Japan's NTT Docomo's commercial LTE (4G) network.
KT's '5G-LTE interoperability technology' used in the demonstration is based on '5G NSA (Non-Standalone, 5G-4G compatible standard),' a standard defined by 3GPP, and is a method scheduled to be adopted for the early commercialization of 5G. Following the establishment of the '5G NSA' international standard last December, rapid 5G commercialization is expected through the utilization of this standard.
This achievement follows the resolution for 5G cooperation among participants at the SCFA (Strategic Cooperation Framework Agreement) General Assembly, and preparations for 5G-LTE roaming between the two companies have been underway since last October. By concluding the demonstration, KT plans to continue global technology cooperation through SCFA to discover differentiated 5G technologies and services.
Meanwhile, KT completed the construction of 5G in Pyeongchang last October and finished preparing for 5G pilot services, and is accelerating preparations for commercialization through the development and verification of 5G technologies such as this 5G-LTE roaming.

He added, 'Based on the know-how from the PyeongChang 5G service, we will continue to provide differentiated satisfaction to customers with the best 5G technology and lead the technology.'"

Experience 5G with ICT Igloo
SK Telecom announced that over 100 global telecommunications experts from the ITU visited the 'ICT Igloo' set up in the plaza in front of Seoul City Hall over the weekend and experienced South Korea's advanced 5G technology and services. The 'Igloo Festival', which runs until February 25th, is an event hosted by the Korea Speed Skating Union and the Korea Ski Association. SK Telecom, as a sponsor, supported the installation of the 'ICT Igloo', an experiential space designed to create special winter memories for visitors.

Artificial intelligence evolving into semiconductors with smaller size and larger capacity
At Semicon Korea 2018, Kang Ho-gyu, Senior Vice President and Head of Samsung Electronics' Semiconductor Research Institute, delivered a keynote speech on semiconductor technologies and directions for the fourth industrial revolution. The semiconductor industry is expected to maintain strong momentum in 2018 due to improved global economic conditions and increased demand from IoT, autonomous vehicles, and other sectors. As examples, Dubai drone delivery will soon be commercialized, and at Amazon Go, customers no longer need to stand in line. Japan's Pepper Robot has already begun service at hotels in Japan. European Patent Applications Surpass 200,000 for the First Time… South Korea Maintains 5th Place, Led by Batteries and Telecommunications
According to the European Patent Office (EPO)'s 'Technology Dashboard 2025', European patent applications last year reached 201,974, surpassing 200,000 for the first time. Korean companies and inventors filed 14,355 applications, representing a 9.5% increase from the previous year and maintaining 5th place by country. Battery, digital communication, and semiconductor technologies led the growth, with Samsung ranking as the top EPO applicant for the second consecutive year and LG reaching 3rd place. The presence of major domestic cities such as Seoul, Suwon, and Yongin was also confirmed. It was also revealed that Korea's European patent strategy is expanding beyond individual technologies to span the entire industry.

SK Telecom First Applies AI-Based Network Operations at Gwanghwamun K-Pop Concert
SK Telecom announced that it applied an AI-based network operation system for the first time at a large-scale K-pop concert held in the Gwanghwamun area of Seoul on March 21st, managing communication quality throughout the event. Mobile data usage during the three hours before and after the concert reached 12.15TB, approximately doubling compared to the same time slot the previous weekend. SK Telecom monitored traffic using the AI system 'A-One' in five-minute and 50-meter units to respond to potential overload situations, while also operating temporary communication facilities and on-site personnel in parallel. This case is interpreted as confirmation of the practical applicability of AI-based autonomous network operation in an environment where demand from dense events and foreign users increases simultaneously.
