Camera features enhanced with high-speed camera, dual aperture, and noise reduction technology

Samsung Electronics held the 'Samsung Galaxy Unpacked 2018' at Fira Barcelona Montjuïc in Barcelona, Spain, and unveiled its flagship smartphones, the 'Galaxy S9' and 'Galaxy S9+'.

The 'Galaxy S9' and 'Galaxy S9+' focused on a new user experience in the era of 'Visual Communication,' where people communicate through photos, videos, and emojis rather than words or text. By introducing features such as 'Super Slow Motion' and 'AR Emoji,' they concentrated on the evolution of functionality rather than the design of the smartphone.

"Meaningful innovation has always started with people and evolved from them," said Koh Dong-jin, President and Head of Samsung Electronics’ IM Division. "The 'Galaxy S9' and 'Galaxy S9+' will provide a user experience optimized for people living in an era where messages and emotions are shared visually, and will deliver new experiences that make every moment even more special."

Equipped with AR technology and a Speed Dual Pixel image sensor, it provides a new experience using 'vision'.

The 'Galaxy S9' and 'Galaxy S9+' are equipped with a Super Speed Dual Pixel image sensor integrated with dedicated memory (DRAM), enabling vivid capture of everyday moments that are easily overlooked by the naked eye. It is equipped with a 'Super Slow Motion' function that captures 960 frames per second. This is 32 times faster than conventional shooting, showing about 0.2 seconds of movement over approximately 6 seconds.

In particular, it is equipped with a feature that automatically captures in 'Super Slow Motion' by recognizing the movement of the subject. When movement is detected within a designated area, 'Super Slow Motion' recording begins automatically, and the user can freely adjust the size and position of the motion detection area.

The 'Galaxy S9' and 'Galaxy S9+' allow users to press the shutter at the moment they want to capture 'Super Slow Motion' while recording video, and also support the recording of short videos consisting entirely of 'Super Slow Motion'.

It provides three GIF file types—'Loop' for repeating video recorded in 'Super Slow Motion', 'Reverse' for playing the video in reverse, and 'Swing' for playing specific sections back and forth—allowing for easy sharing on social media. You can also set a video recorded in 'Super Slow Motion' as your lock screen.

The rear camera is equipped with a 12-megapixel Super Speed Dual Pixel image sensor, upgrading image quality in low-light environments compared to the previous model. Equipped with a 'Dual Aperture' of F 1.5 and F 2.4 lenses, it can automatically adjust to optimal usage conditions depending on the surrounding environment, just like the human eye.

The F 1.5 lens absorbs 28% more light than its predecessor, and with multi-frame noise reduction technology applied to the Super Speed Dual Pixel image sensor, it reduces noise by up to 30% compared to the previous model, enabling clearer photos to be taken even in low-light environments.

Following the iPhone X, the integration of AR (augmented reality) technology with the camera is also a novel feature. 'AR Emoji' is a function on the 'Galaxy S9' and 'Galaxy S9+' that allows users to create an avatar that closely resembles them with a single selfie. It recognizes and analyzes over 100 facial feature points, including eyes, nose, mouth, cheeks, and forehead, to mimic the user's various expressions in real time.

It creates an emoji that looks just like the user as a 'My Emoji Sticker' capable of expressing 18 different emotions, and 'My Emoji Sticker' can be shared with family and friends not only through text messages but also through any messaging application that uses the Samsung keyboard.

'Bixby Vision,' which provides information beyond simply recognizing objects, has also evolved to the next level. 'Bixby Vision' provides useful information to the user in real time by allowing them to select a desired mode—such as text (translation and currency exchange), shopping, food, makeup, wine, or places—and then point the camera at the subject.

The Galaxy S9+ offers 'Live Focus,' which allows users to freely apply a background blur effect by shooting simultaneously with its dual cameras. In particular, it enables the creation of more beautiful and emotional photos by changing the shape of bokeh to various forms such as hearts and stars. It features Optical Image Stabilization (OIS) to deliver differentiated image quality, allowing users to capture distant subjects vividly without blurring, even when using the telephoto camera that supports 2x optical zoom.

Enjoy entertainment with 'Infinite Display' and 'Dolby Atmos' support

The perfection of the 'Infinity Display' design, which maximized screen size, has been enhanced. The 5.8-inch and 6.2-inch 'Galaxy S9' and 'Galaxy S9+' respectively feature an edge display completed with Samsung Electronics' proprietary technology, with the top and bottom bezels further minimized compared to the previous model and visual distractions further reduced by hiding the iris recognition sensor at the top.

In addition, it features a function that optimally adjusts the contrast ratio according to the surrounding environment, providing a bright and clear viewing experience with an 18.5:9 QHD+ (2,960x1,440) Super AMOLED display.

The sound is equipped with stereo speakers perfected with technology from AKG, Harman's premium audio brand. Supporting 'Dolby Atmos,' users can enjoy a dynamic and three-dimensional listening experience, as if they were surrounded by speakers, even when watching videos on a smartphone.

Enhanced biometric features and built-in 'SmartThings' for electronic device management

The 'Galaxy S9' and 'Galaxy S9+' can be unlocked using iris recognition with 'Intelligent Scan'. You can also set different fingerprint information for unlocking the lock screen and accessing the secure folder where you can manage your important information.

In addition, it is equipped with the latest 10nm octa-core processor with enhanced AI deep learning capabilities and multimedia performance, supports up to 400GB of external memory, IP68 water and dust resistance, Gigabit-speed LTE and Wi-Fi, and high-speed wired and wireless charging.

Samsung DeX, which makes it easier to perform document work as well as use applications and games enjoyed on smartphones on monitors or TVs, has also evolved to the next level. By connecting a smartphone to the newly introduced DeX Pad, users can utilize the smartphone's keyboard and touch functions as they are.

In addition, Samsung Electronics is equipping the device with 'SmartThings' for the first time, which allows users to manage various IoT electronic devices, such as Smart TVs, Family Hub refrigerators, washing machines, and vacuum cleaners, from a single application on a smartphone. Through the 'SmartThings' application, users can connect various devices and easily control them using voice commands via Bixby, an intelligence interface.

The 'Galaxy S9' and 'Galaxy S9+' are scheduled to be released sequentially worldwide, including in the US, China, and Europe, starting March 16 in a total of four colors: Midnight Black, Titanium Gray, Coral Blue, and Lilac Purple.
