Eliminating safety blind spots through intensive operation in CCTV dead zones

KT and Hwaseong City announced that they signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) at the main building of Hwaseong City Hall to establish a control system for safe return home and surveillance of high-crime areas using drones. The event was attended by officials from both sides, including Hwaseong Mayor Chae In-seok and Ahn Sang-geun, Head of KT's Capital Area Gangnam Customer Headquarters.

On this day, KT demonstrated its drone control solution in the presence of officials, including Mayor Chae. A drone equipped with a warning light took off, converted to fixed-wing mode at a distance of 100 meters to film blind spots, transmitted low-speed (20 km/h) video to the ground, and then moved at high speed (70 km/h) to seamlessly transmit high-definition video to ground control personnel. All video transmission was carried out via KT's LTE network, which provides the highest level of stability and coverage.

Currently, Hwaseong City operates a total of approximately 7,000 CCTVs, helping citizens enjoy a safe and convenient life 24 hours a day in various fields such as daily life, traffic, safety, and crime prevention. Recently, local governments have been gradually transitioning from SD-quality CCTVs to HD-quality ones, but the overall penetration rate has not yet reached 100%. In addition, CCTVs installed on roads and alleys have difficulty detecting building rooftops or objects at high altitudes.

However, by using drones, it is expected that safety blind spots can be eliminated by operating intensively during times vulnerable to crime or in CCTV blind spots, thereby dramatically increasing the safety index and guaranteeing citizens' safe return home.

Ahn Sang-geun, Executive Vice President and Head of KT’s Metropolitan Area Gangnam Customer Headquarters, stated, “There are no limits to the areas where KT’s future convergence ICT technology can be applied. We expect Hwaseong City to become the safest and most livable city in the country by linking it with the next-generation drone KT LTE/5G Skyship, which applies KT’s future convergence ICT technology, and KT’s intelligent CCTV ‘GiGAeyes’.”
