KT announced that it successfully demonstrated providing gigabit internet service using the '5G WTTx (Wireless To The X)' solution at 'Island Village', a townhouse located in Muan-gun, Jeollanam-do.

WTTx is a solution that replaces the section where information is transmitted via optical cables with a wireless one. By utilizing this technology, it is possible to provide gigabit internet infrastructure-level services even in environments where wired infrastructure construction is difficult. Last year, KT was the first in Korea to apply its 5G WTTx solution to the top of the ski jump tower at the Alpensia Stadium in Pyeongchang and to Uiyaji Village in Pyeongchang.

This demonstration used the 5G WTTx solution to wirelessly connect a 5G base station built in Samyang-eup, Muan-gun, to a 5G terminal located in a pension in 'Island Village' about 1km away, and successfully implemented gigabit internet coverage based on the 5G network created in this way, providing IPTV, WiFi, and internet phone (VoIP) services.

In addition, in this demonstration, KT completed technical verification of 5G quality in maritime environments and weather conditions such as sea fog in the process of building a 5G network in a maritime environment that connects base stations located outside the island and terminals located on the island for the first time in a 5G demonstration.

KT has been making efforts to provide gigabit internet service by utilizing the 5G WTTx solution since last year to islands and vulnerable areas where it is difficult to build wired infrastructure, and explained that it plans to expand the application of the 5G WTTx solution to islands and mountainous areas nationwide in the future so that everyone can enjoy the service without discrimination.

In addition, we plan to continue conducting 5G field tests in various environments, including maritime environments, to secure technological superiority and to continue 5G quality testing, including on islands and in shadow areas, in preparation for 5G commercialization.
