Integrated power MOSFET and shielded inductor in an ultra-small, low-profile footprint

Texas Instruments (TI) announced the introduction of a 5.5V step-down power module that delivers continuous 6A output current with up to 95% efficiency.

The easy-to-use TPSM82480 DC/DC module integrates power MOSFETs and shielded inductors in an ultra-small, low-profile footprint, making it ideal for space- and height-constrained applications such as point-of-load (POL) communications, networking, test and measurement, and power supplies.

The highly integrated TPSM82480 can maintain 6A output current across the entire temperature range without requiring additional airflow. This is achieved by utilizing a two-phase control topology, sharing the load between phases to achieve high efficiency and balanced operation. Additional features include adjustable soft start, a voltage selector (VSEL) function that supports multiple processor stages, and a Power Good indicator.

The TPSM82480 features an ultra-small footprint: using two input/output capacitors and two resistors, it can achieve a solution with an 80mm² footprint measuring just 1.5mm high. An optional automatic power-saving mode ensures high efficiency across the entire load range and proactively warns the system to reduce power before overheating occurs.
