Focus on securing core AI technologies
The Artificial Intelligence Research Institute, which will begin full-scale operations in September, will conduct artificial intelligence research by conducting various industry-academic projects in collaboration with the University of Toronto.

Canada is actively conducting research in the field of artificial intelligence, including machine learning, primarily at universities, and various global companies are investing in related research, making it an ideal location for securing future technologies.

LG Electronics plans to secure core AI technologies based on Canada's AI research infrastructure and research achievements from the University of Toronto. We are also considering collaborating with or investing in local Canadian AI startups.

LG Electronics expects that the Toronto AI Lab will create synergy by collaborating with AI research organizations in Seoul, Silicon Valley, Bangalore, and Moscow.

Last June, LG Electronics established an AI Research Center within its Software Center under its CTO division. The research center is researching technologies essential for developing AI products and services, including voice recognition, image recognition, biometrics, and deep learning algorithms. Earlier this year, the company established "Advanced AI," an AI research organization within its Silicon Valley Labs in the United States, to research deep learning and future automotive technologies.

“The industry-academia collaboration between LG Electronics and the University of Toronto will serve as a model for future open innovation in the field of artificial intelligence,” said Meric Gertler, president of the University of Toronto.

LG Electronics CTO (Chief Technology Officer) Park Il-pyeong said, “This collaboration will demonstrate that the ‘open partnership’ strategy is effective in developing core technologies,” and added, “We will continue to research artificial intelligence technologies that can provide real value to customers.”

LG Electronics is continuously striving to expand the scope of its AI ecosystem based on three open strategies: Open Platform, Open Partnership, and Open Connectivity.
