LG AI TV, Enhanced AI Through 'Google Assistant' Integration

LG Electronics is significantly expanding Google's AI assistant 'Google Assistant' on AI TVs launched this year. LG AI TVs, including OLED TV AI ThinQ and Super Ultra HD TV AI ThinQ, are equipped with both a proprietary AI platform 'Deep ThinQ' and Google Assistant, providing more sophisticated AI services.
The Google Assistant service, first applied in the US in May, will be rolled out to a total of 8 countries including Germany, UK, France, Spain, Australia, Canada, and Korea by year-end. Supported languages will also expand from the existing English to 5 languages total, including German, French, Spanish, and Korean.
At the 'IFA 2018' exhibition, LG Electronics plans to demonstrate AI TV equipped with Google Assistant performing Google-linked functions such as photos, translation, and maps in English as well as German, French, and Spanish.
When users hold down the microphone icon on the Magic Remote of LG AI TV with Google Assistant applied and issue voice commands, they can easily check weather, restaurant information, sports schedules and results. Users can register schedules on Google Calendar or view images saved in Google Photos on a large screen.
Through Google Assistant, LG AI TV can interoperate with over 5,000 smart devices, also serving as a smart home hub. Users can control not only LG AI TVs but also robot vacuum cleaners, thermostats, air purifiers, and smart lighting connected to Google Home through 'Google Home', a smart speaker based on Google Assistant. Google Home interoperability features have been first applied in the US, UK, Australia, and Canada, and will be expanded to Germany, France, Korea, and Japan by year-end.
LG AI TV can also be controlled through Amazon's AI assistant 'Alexa' equipped 'Echo' speakers. Echo speaker interoperability features are currently available in the US and UK.
LG Electronics AI TV also supports natural language voice recognition based on Deep ThinQ. Eliminating the inconvenience of users having to press buttons multiple times to operate, holding down the microphone icon button on the Magic Remote enables commands ranging from 'AI-customized search' to 'AI TV control' and 'AI video and sound mode adjustment'.
From channel search/recommendations to diverse content information searches, everything can be done with a single voice command. For example, saying "Show me how to make kimchi fried rice" finds related videos from TV programs, VOD services, and YouTube. While watching a TV program, asking "Who's that?" provides cast information.
TV functions such as volume adjustment, channel change, broadcast recording reservation, and TV sleep timer can be easily controlled by voice, and can be conveniently connected with other devices such as soundbars, Blu-ray players, and game consoles. When changing video modes for movies, sports, or games, optimal picture quality and sound suited to the video type are provided.
Kwon Bong-seok, President of LG Electronics' HE Business Division, stated, "By equipping both a proprietary AI platform and Google Assistant, we will provide a more advanced AI experience" and "We will continue to lead the premium TV market with AI TV."
