NVIDIA Xavier adopted for next-generation car development
Planned to provide Level 2 or higher assisted driving functions
Integration of six types of processors
Volvo Cars has chosen NVIDIA DRIVE AGX Xavier computers to develop its next-generation car, which will go into production in early 2020.

Volvo, with its AI car computer, NVIDIA DRIVE AGX Xavier, will streamline the development of autonomous driving features while reducing the total cost of development and support. Furthermore, the vehicle's initial production model will offer Level 2 and higher assisted driving capabilities, surpassing existing ADAS capabilities.

The two companies plan to collaborate on developing autonomous driving capabilities that uniquely integrate 360-degree surround perception and driver monitoring systems. Volvo will leverage NVIDIA-based computing platforms to implement new connectivity services, energy management technologies, in-car personalization options, and autonomous driving technologies.

NVIDIA DRIVE AGX includes the NVIDIA Xavier SoC, the world's first processor for autonomous driving. Designed for safety, the Xavier SoC integrates six different types of processors for redundant or diverse algorithms.

Jensen Huang, founder and CEO of NVIDIA, said in his keynote speech at the GPU Technology Conference (GTC) Europe 2018, “Autonomous driving technology will improve driving safety and convenience. For cars to drive on behalf of drivers and continuously monitor them, different sensor architectures, AI software, computing and safety technologies are required.” He added, “Volvo understands the close correlation between safety and comfort in the vehicle and computing capabilities.”

“Successfully launching autonomous driving will require enormous computing power and continuous advancements in AI,” said Håkan Samuelsson, President and CEO of Volvo Cars. “Our collaboration with NVIDIA is part of this journey and will significantly contribute to our ability to offer our customers safe, fully autonomous vehicles.”

Meanwhile, this announcement is an extension of the companies' June 2017 plan to collaborate with Veoneer and Zenuity to develop a Level 4 autonomous driving system using the scalable NVIDIA DRIVE platform.
