Gachon University Aims to Develop and Commercialize 5G-Linked Medical Content

KT is stepping forward to cooperate with universities to foster future 5G talent.
On the 16th, KT signed a business agreement with Yonsei University to build a '5G Open Platform' based on a commercial 5G network. Under this agreement, KT will build the 5G Open Platform together with Yonsei University and plans to launch it this coming December.

The 5G Open Platform is a platform that can develop and verify key 5G services such as disaster safety and autonomous driving.

KT plans to connect Yonsei University's Sinchon Campus and Songdo International Campus with a commercial 5G network using the 3.5GHz and 28GHz frequency bands. Based on this, we will build a 5G open platform and develop and verify a service that remotely controls mobile devices such as drones and connected cars through a 5G network.

Since this year, KT has been conducting research in the fields of disaster rescue and factory automation using mobile devices through the PriMO-5G research project, in collaboration with Yonsei University and involving telecommunications companies, universities, and research institutions in Korea and Europe. Through the 5G open platform being established, the results of the research project will be verified in an actual 5G commercial environment.

In addition, we plan to apply ultra-low latency communication technologies such as URLLC to 5G commercial networks to provide an environment where various services, such as space-time transcending virtual reality systems linked with latency-sensitive mobiles, can be verified, and to discover 5G convergence services linked to this.

In addition, attempts in various fields utilizing 5G communication technology are expected to take place. Yonsei University plans to develop immersive media educational content that allows students at the Sinchon Campus and Songdo International Campus to simultaneously participate in redesigning library spaces through KT's 5G network, and to verify the effectiveness of remote anatomy lecture demonstrations and video transmission speed improvements in medical settings.

"KT expects that through the 5G Open Platform, we will be able to establish an environment for developing and verifying core services based on commercial 5G networks," said Oh Sung-mok, President of KT Network Division. "Based on the 5G Open Platform, we will expand cooperation with domestic and international industry, academia, and research institutes and proactively discover differentiated convergence services."
On the same day, KT signed a business agreement with Gachon University for the "establishment of a 5G-based smart campus."

KT and Gachon University have agreed to cooperate in building a 5G-based smart campus and creating an environment for nurturing talent tailored to the era of the Fourth Industrial Revolution. In addition, we plan to jointly develop medical and educational content linked with 5G for the first time in the country and push for commercialization.

The areas of cooperation include supporting startups and research by students and professors using the KT 5G Open Lab, producing experiential e-learning content using VR/AR technology, applying an intelligent robot guidance system that supports voice recognition, touchscreen, translation, and building guidance, and building a 5G campus network (for pilot testing).

KT and Gachon University students and professors plan to utilize the KT 5G Open Lab located in Umyeon-dong, Seocho-gu, Seoul, to discover new ideas and collaborate on research. Through this, it is expected that various 5G use cases will be discovered and contribute to the early activation of the 5G ecosystem.

In addition, the plan is to build a smart campus for Gachon University by leveraging KT's ICT capabilities and experience, including 5G, immersive media services (VR/AR), AI, and IoT. Furthermore, there are plans to develop medical VR content that can help improve the cognitive abilities of the elderly and distribute it to Gachon University Gil Hospital via cloud-based VR.
