10-Gigabit Internet to Help Accelerate the Establishment of a National 5G Network

On the 31st, KT held a press conference at KT Square in Gwanghwamun, Seoul, and announced the nationwide commercial launch of "10 Gigabit Internet," a wired Internet service offering speeds of up to 10 Gbps. KT's newly launched 10 Gigabit Internet will be available in major cities nationwide, including Seoul and six metropolitan cities, starting November 1st.

In October 2014, KT commercialized "Giga Internet," Korea's first wired Internet service offering speeds of up to 1 Gbps. Now, it is launching the nationwide commercialization of 10-Gigabit Internet, a first in the country, with speeds of up to 10 Gbps. Currently, 4.8 million of KT's 8.6 million subscribers, or approximately 55%, are using Giga Internet.
It is expected that 10 gigabit internet, which is 10 times faster than gigabit internet, will enable ultra-high definition (UHD) one-person broadcasting and bring realistic entertainment based on virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) into everyday life. Furthermore, as it can exchange massive amounts of data at high speeds, it is expected to serve as a catalyst for the emergence of IoT and cloud-based innovative services.

KT explained that 10 Gigabit Internet will serve as the foundation for stable service delivery not only in wired but also wireless (5G) networks. With the wired infrastructure for 10 Gigabit Internet established, the bandwidth of the wired backbone network (the backbone connecting wired, wireless, and broadcast networks) has been expanded, laying the foundation for more stable speeds and higher quality in 5G.

KT has made every effort to provide stable 10-gigabit internet service. Since 2016, it has been building 10-gigabit internet and conducting pilot services in select areas, including Seoul, Gyeonggi Province, and Pyeongchang in Gangwon Province. Starting in May of this year, KT has participated in the "10-gigabit internet commercialization promotion project," hosted by the Ministry of Science and ICT and the National Information Society Agency. Through this project, it has developed a 10-gigabit solution and completed verification through pilot projects.

Among domestic telecommunications companies, KT boasts the highest proportion of fiber-to-the-home (FTTH-R) infrastructure (57%). Building on this, KT plans to commercialize 10-gigabit internet in major cities nationwide first, then gradually expand coverage.

KT has announced plans to invest KRW 9.6 trillion in wired and wireless networks, including 10 Gigabit Internet and 5G, from 2019 to 2023. KT anticipates that 10 Gigabit Internet will contribute to the early deployment of a nationwide 5G network. Furthermore, the company announced its goal of taking the lead in building a 10 Gigabit Internet ecosystem by forming partnerships with manufacturers, equipment vendors, and affiliates.

KT predicted that the launch of 10Gbps Internet would have three effects. First, a significant increase in the consumption and production of media content, including individual media, will create an environment in which users can enjoy the Internet more conveniently.

Internet usage trends show that demand for large-capacity streaming and ultra-high-speed uploads accounts for a significant portion. Accordingly, 10-gigabit internet is expected to be highly popular with video-intensive users. KT's 10-gigabit internet offers up to 10 Gbps for both upload and download speeds. For example, downloading a 33GB UHD movie takes approximately 45 minutes with 100 Mbps internet, 4 minutes and 30 seconds with 1 Gbps internet, and 30 seconds with 10 Gbps internet.

Additionally, in an environment where the number of devices connected to home Wi-Fi routers is rapidly increasing, Wi-Fi can be used at a more comfortable speed. According to a Cisco report, the average number of devices (mainly PCs) connected to the Internet per person in 2003 was only one, but this number is expected to increase to 13 by 2021.

As the number of devices using Wi-Fi at home increases, internet speeds on each device inevitably slow down. KT aims to address this issue with 10-gigabit Wi-Fi.

Following its 10-gigabit internet, KT will launch 10-gigabit Wi-Fi, offering speeds of up to 1.7 Gbps, at the end of November. The mesh technology used in the existing "Giga Wi-Fi Wave 2 (GWW2)" automatically connects routers to the optimal frequency to provide uninterrupted internet access. The company plans to expand this technology to 10-gigabit Wi-Fi in the first half of 2019. Furthermore, in September 2019, it plans to launch a Wi-Fi router that supports the Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax) standard and offers speeds of up to 4.8 Gbps.

Finally, KT plans to contribute to accelerating the Fourth Industrial Revolution in Korea by providing a B2B-only 10-gigabit Internet service for corporations and institutions. It is expected that the fast speed of 10-gigabit internet will increase industrial competitiveness by combining with AI, blockchain, etc., and public Wi-Fi based on 10-gigabit internet will become a core infrastructure of smart cities.
