KT, UHD content on VR devices via 5G network
Securing 5G VR IPTV playback technology

KT announced on the 25th that, ahead of the opening of the full-scale 5G era next year, it has developed the world's first '5G VR IPTV technology' that allows its IPTV service, 'Olletv,' to be viewed in external environments through wireless-based standalone VR devices (Head Mounted Display, HMD).
Existing LTE network-based smartphone video services found it difficult to provide high-definition, immersive services due to limitations in speed and display size.

However, with the application of '5G VR IPTV' technology, users can utilize a 5G mobile network that is 20 times faster and a highly immersive HMD to watch high-definition UHD real-time channels and VoD services identical to the IPTV services provided by existing set-top boxes (STBs), and enjoy Olleh TV content anywhere, even outside of the home.

To this end, KT developed a media player for HMDs, content encryption/decryption and UI/UX technologies, as well as unicast-based channel streaming technology that can be linked with 5G networks.

When 5G is fully commercialized, 5G-exclusive VR content and UHD-level high-definition immersive media services are expected to receive significant attention.r />
