SK Telecom President Park Jung-ho said on the 29th, ahead of the commercialization of 5G on the 1st of next month, through an internal bulletin board, “As a company that is opening the 5G era, let’s have a strong sense of responsibility and lead the New ICT innovation in Korea based on the convergence of 5G and AI.”

SK Telecom plans to lead New ICT innovation in Korea by going beyond simple 5G network construction and integrating it with AI.
President Park said, “5G is the main artery connecting people and things, and things and things in the era of the Fourth Industrial Revolution, and AI is the brain that analyzes complex data and finds optimal solutions,” adding, “It will become SK Telecom’s core competitiveness.” He also emphasized that “5G and AI will be the core infrastructure that will lead the Fourth Industrial Revolution and trigger an era of hyper-connectivity and hyper-convergence,” and that “all things that have been offline until now will be precisely and quickly connected, giving rise to new industries and values that go beyond our imagination.”


5G operators must not forget their social responsibility.
“The fire at KT’s Ahyeon branch has provided us with a concise glimpse into the dangers that lie behind the bright future of our hyper-connected society,” said CEO Park. “We must use this as an opportunity to fully prepare for the construction of a perfect 5G network.”

He also said, “We must never forget the grave social responsibility of operating the communications infrastructure that forms the foundation of the New ICT ecosystem,” and “As networks, life, and society become increasingly complex, even a moment’s shaking will not be tolerated in the future.”

He added, “The bright future of the Fourth Industrial Revolution can only blossom on the foundation of customer and public trust in 5G infrastructure.”


Promoting barrier-free collaboration with small and medium-sized enterprises and startups
SK Telecom has recognized the importance of 5G stability and security and has been developing related technologies. At MWC earlier this year, President Park presented network stability and security as key 5G agendas and emphasized the fostering of a related ecosystem.

President Park stated, “We will develop next-generation technologies that can ensure the security and stability of infrastructure, such as quantum cryptography and AI networks, and apply them simultaneously with the commercialization of 5G.”

He also expressed his determination, saying, “We will not spare investment in new technologies and always have the highest level of safety and security system,” and “We will pursue barrier-free cooperation with global top players, small and medium-sized enterprises, and startups.”


From manufacturing to commercialization of 5G services
SK Telecom will launch 5G service in Seoul, the Seoul metropolitan area, and the six major metropolitan cities starting at midnight on the 1st of next month. The 5G service area will expand sequentially.

5G commercial services will be available first to corporate customers in the manufacturing sector. The first domestic customer for SK Telecom's 5G/AI convergence service, scheduled to launch on the 1st of next month, is Myunghwa Industrial Co., Ltd., located in the Banwol Industrial Complex in Ansan, Gyeonggi Province. Myunghwa Industrial Co., Ltd., an automotive parts specialist, projects sales of approximately 610 billion won this year.

Myunghwa Industrial Co., Ltd. is deploying SK Telecom's "5G-AI Machine Vision" to verify product quality. Ultra-high-definition photos taken from multiple angles of products on the production line are transmitted to a cloud server via a 5G mobile router. The server's AI instantly analyzes the photos and checks for product defects.

Industrial 5G services are provided as a package, including mobile routers, communications, and solutions. Due to the customized nature of the service, fees vary by company. SK Telecom plans to expand its 5G customer base across various industries.


SK 5G: AI Network, Security, and Perceived Speed

An "AI network" accurately predicts the times and locations of peak traffic to maintain optimal communication quality. It anticipates traffic fluctuations and allocates capacity in advance, automatically adjusting base station antenna orientation and radio transmission areas.

To ensure thorough 5G security, SK Telecom will first apply quantum cryptography technology to the Seoul-Ansan section of its 5G network starting next month. It also plans to apply it to its customer authentication server in the first quarter of next year.

SK Telecom began developing quantum cryptography technology in 2011, and in 2017, it developed the world's smallest quantum random number generator (QRNG) chip (measuring 5 x 5 mm). In February, it acquired IDQ, the world's leading quantum cryptography company, further solidifying its world-class technological capabilities.

SK Telecom also secures the "clean 5G frequency" essential for high speeds. The absence of frequency interference from adjacent bands ensures faster perceived speeds. Furthermore, it secures the widest LTE frequency. If the 'Dual Connectivity' technology, which combines LTE and 5G to transmit data simultaneously, is commercialized, it will be able to provide the fastest communication service in the country.
