NVIDIA will host a 'hackathon' this coming February in collaboration with the Korea Institute of Science and Technology Information (KISTI), Oak Ridge National Laboratory, and the Yonsei University AI Center.

This hackathon, taking place at Yonsei University’s Sinchon Campus from February 18 to 22, 2019, was organized to keep pace with the Fourth Industrial Revolution and to provide graduate researchers and government and private research institutes with diverse experiences with GPU parallel computing solutions such as OpenACC and NVIDIA CUDA technology, as well as to offer future data scientists the opportunity to expand their expertise in analytical programming using GPUs.

A hackathon, a portmanteau of "hacking" and "marathon," is an event where experts from various fields gather to generate ideas for problem-solving and produce practical results. With the goal of further advancing the data industry, it plays a driving role in leading technological development in the field of data science, as well as in related pure and applied sciences such as High Performance Computing (HPC), physics, and chemistry, by utilizing creative ideas.

This hackathon is a project where teams of 3 to 6 members work for five days to accelerate their code on GPUs and optimize performance using OpenACC or CUDA. A key feature of this hackathon is that experts from NVIDIA and ORLN, who can assist with porting code to GPUs or optimizing performance, will be assigned as mentors.

While experience with GPU-based programming is not required to participate in the hackathon, proficiency in the code brought is necessary. This hackathon is expected to be particularly welcome news for developers who program using GPUs.

The application period is from Monday, December 10 to Friday, January 11, and approximately 6 final teams are expected to be selected after a 10-day screening process. The selected teams will receive orientation on February 11, 2019, and will conduct the hackathon in earnest for five days starting Monday, February 18.
