KT Launches Next-Generation Messaging Service Chat

KT is launching Chat, a next-generation messaging service that can replace existing text messages.
KT announced on the 28th that it will launch 'Chatting,' a next-generation messaging service (Rich Communication Suite, RCS) that can replace existing text messages.

RCS is a data-driven messenger-type service that adds features such as group chat to existing Short Message Service (SMS) and Multimedia Messaging Service (MMS), serving as a next-generation communication service. KT prepared for the service launch in collaboration with Samsung Electronics to provide a mobile environment capable of offering users convenience and diverse value.

The newly launched chat service can be used directly on smartphones without the need to download a separate application. You can use the chat service in your smartphone messaging app if you agree to use it.

The strength of the chat is that you can group chat with up to 100 people simultaneously and send large files up to 100MB.

While existing MMS was limited to a 1MB data transmission limit, the chat service allows you to share photos and videos in their original form without any loss of quality. Furthermore, depending on whether the recipient is using the chat service, the message automatically switches between chat and standard text messaging. You can also check whether the recipient has received the message.

KT's chat service is characterized by its chatbot capabilities. Users can engage in one-on-one consultations and inquire about product information through chatbot services provided by companies. The service is scheduled to be upgraded in the future to enable product ordering and payment within the chat service.

Unlike text messages, chat services do not incur separate charges, and data is deducted based on the rate plan in use. KT plans to first apply the service to Samsung Electronics' premium flagship smartphone, the Galaxy Note 9, starting on the 28th, and then expand it to the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ in January 2019.

Park Hyun-jin, Senior Vice President and Head of the 5G Business Division at KT Marketing, said, “With the arrival of the 5G era, we have launched Chat, a next-generation messaging service that can provide new value and experiences to customers,” adding, “Following the RCS service, a 5G-type messaging service, we plan to continue introducing evolved services through 5G-type video communication services.”

Meanwhile, KT is running a promotion from the 27th to June 30, 2019, that allows users to use the chat service for free without data deduction.
