LS Cable & System Becomes First Korean to Enter Taiwanese Submarine Cable Market
Supplying 170km of submarine cables to Taiwan's offshore wind farm
Establishing cooperation with European companies, expecting to secure hundreds of billions of won in orders

LS Cable & System will supply submarine cables to Taiwan for the first time in Korea.
LS Cable & System announced on the 7th that it has signed a contract with the German wind power company wpd to supply 170 km of 66kV submarine cables to an offshore wind farm off the coast of Yunlin County in western Taiwan by 2020.

Taiwan is pursuing the construction of large-scale offshore wind farms in stages by 2030 to stop operating nuclear power plants and expand the share of renewable energy.

The first phase of the Taiwanese government's project to build a 5.5GW wind farm by 2025 with an investment of approximately $23 billion is being led by European wind power developers.

LS Cable & System stated that it has built close cooperative relationships with operators while supplying cables to major European offshore wind farms in the UK, the Netherlands, and Belgium for over 10 years, and that securing trust in terms of delivery time and quality helped in winning the order.

"The Taiwan offshore wind power business is a blue ocean market where demand for submarine cables worth hundreds of billions of won and over 2,000 km is expected in the first phase alone," said Myung Noh-hyun, CEO of LS Cable & System, adding, "This project"We are also expecting to secure additional orders based on this," he said.

Submarine cables are used for power transmission between wind turbines or between power complexes and substations. Previously, 33kV cables were mainly used, but the use of 66kV cables is expanding for large-capacity power generation.

LS Cable & System expects to secure a favorable position in the next-generation wind power market by applying the 66kV class for the first time in Asia.

Meanwhile, wpd was founded in Germany in 1996 and is leading the market by building over 400 wind farms centered in Europe, North America, and Asia.
