LG Electronics is partnering with KAIST to accelerate the development of next-generation mobile communications.
On the 28th, LG Electronics established the 'LG Electronics-KAIST 6G Research Center' at the KAIST INSTITUTE (KI) in Yuseong-gu, Daejeon, to research next-generation mobile communication technologies, and held an opening ceremony. The event was attended by LG Electronics Chief Technology Officer (President) Park Il-pyung, LG Electronics Next Generation Standards Research Institute Director (Executive Vice President) Kim Byung-hoon, KAIST Vice President for Research Park Hee-kyung, and KI Research Institute Director Lee Sang-yup.
LG Electronics and KAIST established a 6G research center and held an opening ceremony.
The first director of the research center will be Professor Dongho Cho of the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering at KAIST.
Established in 2006, KI is focusing on developing new growth engines for the Korean economy through convergence research across various academic disciplines. In particular, its competitiveness is recognized in the field of next-generation mobile communication development, having been selected as one of the top 100 outstanding national R&D achievements for two consecutive years starting in 2016.
LG Electronics plans to secure next-generation mobile communication foundational technologies extending from 5G to 6G by jointly carrying out various industry-academia projects based on KI's research personnel and infrastructure.
Professor Cho Dong-ho, head of the LG Electronics-KAIST 6G Research Center, said, “Starting the development of core 6th-generation mobile communication technology one step ahead is of great significance in enhancing Korea’s mobile communication technology competitiveness 10 years from now and preparing for future industries.”
LG Electronics CTO Park Il-pyung stated, “With the establishment of the 6G Research Center, we will further strengthen research on next-generation mobile communication technologies to lead global standardization and secure opportunities to create new businesses utilizing them.”
Meanwhile, according to an analysis by the U.S. patent analysis firm TechIPM, LG Electronics has ranked first in the world for five consecutive years (2012–2016) in 4G (LTE/LTE-A) standard patents and has secured global technological leadership in the mobile communications field, such as being the first in the world to propose and standardize the Cellular-V2X specification, a core technology for autonomous vehicles.

SK Telecom Opens 5G Device Performance Testing Facility for SMEs
SK Telecom has opened a 5G Device Test Lab at its Seongnam Bundang headquarters, serving as the final gateway for testing 5G device performance. The 5G Device Test Lab, with a floor area of 100 pyeong, is equipped with measurement equipment, laboratories, and conference rooms, staffed with specialized personnel who conduct quality verification. Inside the laboratory are 5G base stations, repeaters, measurement instruments for radio wave testing, and electromagnetic field measurement equipment. Additionally, it is enclosed by radio wave shielding walls made of steel plates 25cm thick, which completely block external frequency signals and enable accurate testing.

European Patent Applications Surpass 200,000 for the First Time… South Korea Maintains 5th Place, Led by Batteries and Telecommunications
According to the European Patent Office (EPO)'s 'Technology Dashboard 2025', European patent applications last year reached 201,974, surpassing 200,000 for the first time. Korean companies and inventors filed 14,355 applications, representing a 9.5% increase from the previous year and maintaining 5th place by country. Battery, digital communication, and semiconductor technologies led the growth, with Samsung ranking as the top EPO applicant for the second consecutive year and LG reaching 3rd place. The presence of major domestic cities such as Seoul, Suwon, and Yongin was also confirmed. It was also revealed that Korea's European patent strategy is expanding beyond individual technologies to span the entire industry.

SK Telecom First Applies AI-Based Network Operations at Gwanghwamun K-Pop Concert
SK텔레콤이 3월 21일 서울 광화문 일대에서 열린 대형 K-팝 공연에 AI 기반 네트워크 운영 시스템을 처음 적용해 통신 품질을 관리했다고 밝혔다. 공연 전후 3시간 동안 모바일 데이터 사용량은 12.15TB로 직전 주말 같은 시간대보다 약 2배 늘었다. SK텔레콤은 AI 시스템 ‘A-One’을 활용해 5분 단위, 50m 단위로 트래픽을 감시하며 과부하 가능성에 대응했고, 임시 통신 시설과 현장 인력 운영도 병행했다. 밀집 행사와 외국인 이용 수요가 동시에 늘어나는 환경에서 AI 기반 자율 네트워크 운영의 현장 적용 가능성을 확인한 사례로 해석된다.
