[MWC19 Preview] KT Unveils 5G, a New Perspective on Everyday Life

KT announced on the 17th that it will showcase KT's 5G technology and various services under the theme of '5G is coming to reality' at the 'Mobile World Congress 2019 (MWC19)', the world's largest mobile communications exhibition held in Barcelona, Spain from the 25th to the 28th (local time).

KT is participating in 'Innovation City', a joint exhibition hall of the Global System for Mobile Communications Association (GSMA), along with global companies such as Google, Rakuten, Huawei, and Turkcell.
The KT exhibition hall consists of six zones: 5G Skyship, 5G Remote Cockpit, 5G Factory, 5G Playground, 5G 360-degree Video, and 5G AI Hotel Robot.
The 5G Skyship Zone introduces the world's first disaster safety platform that combines 5G, unmanned airships, and drone technology. The 5G Skyship is a helium-based airship that overcomes the limitations of drones, such as flight distance, flight time, and payload. It is characterized by the ability to check high-definition video captured by the Skyship in real time at the ground control center by combining it with 5G technology.
In particular, the 5G Skyship Zone will showcase a demonstration of 5G technology controlling cameras mounted on a 5G Skyship flying in Korea from Spain. The 5G Remote Cockpit Zone will offer a hands-on experience of real-time remote autonomous driving and control utilizing the 5G network.
The 5G Factory Zone showcases 5G services applicable to industrial settings. These include the "5G Connected Robot," which connects to external intelligent services via 5G to enhance production process efficiency; the "5G AR Supporter," an AR-based remote support solution for industrial sites; and KT's enterprise-specific 5G base station solution, "Open Enterprise Radio."
In addition, there is the '5G Playground Zone' where you can experience a realistic VR baseball game centered around GiGA Live TV, the '5G 360-degree Video Zone' that showcases various technologies for 360-degree high-definition video analysis and video call services, and the '5G AI Hotel Robot Zone' that applies 5G technology to transmit robot map data.
KT Vice President and Head of Public Relations Jongjin Yoon said, “KT has worked hard to showcase KT’s 5G technology and 5G services that can be experienced in daily life at MWC 2019,” and “As Korea’s leading telecommunications company, visitors from around the world will be able to experience Korea’s advanced 5G technology.”

KT, the first in Korea to apply 'mesh structure' to 5G backbone network
KT has completed the domestic first application of a 'Mesh' structure that directly connects major cities nationwide to its 5G backbone network, in order to provide high-quality, ultra-low latency 5G services. In the existing wired and wireless communication backbone networks, including LTE, there were no direct connection paths between regions due to traffic processing architecture, requiring all inter-regional traffic to necessarily pass through the metropolitan center. To address this, the Mesh structure that KT applied to its 5G backbone network refers to a grid-type structure that directly interconnects major regional centers throughout the country.

Three Mobile Carriers Announce 2018 Earnings: "Wireless Stagnates, IPTV Strong"
LG Uplus achieved annual revenue of 12.1251 trillion won and operating profit of 730.9 billion won in 2018. These figures represent increases of 0.7% and 3.7%, respectively, compared to the previous year. KT recorded annual revenue of 23.4601 trillion won and operating profit of 1.2615 trillion won in 2018. These figures represent increases of 1.6% compared to the previous year and a decrease of 11.4% in operating profit year-over-year. SK Telecom achieved annual revenue of 16.8740 trillion won and operating profit of 1.2018 trillion won in 2018. These figures represent decreases of 3.7% and 21.8%, respectively, compared to the previous year.

European Patent Applications Surpass 200,000 for the First Time… South Korea Maintains 5th Place, Led by Batteries and Telecommunications
According to the European Patent Office (EPO)'s 'Technology Dashboard 2025', European patent applications last year reached 201,974, surpassing 200,000 for the first time. Korean companies and inventors filed 14,355 applications, representing a 9.5% increase from the previous year and maintaining 5th place by country. Battery, digital communication, and semiconductor technologies led the growth, with Samsung ranking as the top EPO applicant for the second consecutive year and LG reaching 3rd place. The presence of major domestic cities such as Seoul, Suwon, and Yongin was also confirmed. It was also revealed that Korea's European patent strategy is expanding beyond individual technologies to span the entire industry.

SK Telecom First Applies AI-Based Network Operations at Gwanghwamun K-Pop Concert
SK텔레콤이 3월 21일 서울 광화문 일대에서 열린 대형 K-팝 공연에 AI 기반 네트워크 운영 시스템을 처음 적용해 통신 품질을 관리했다고 밝혔다. 공연 전후 3시간 동안 모바일 데이터 사용량은 12.15TB로 직전 주말 같은 시간대보다 약 2배 늘었다. SK텔레콤은 AI 시스템 ‘A-One’을 활용해 5분 단위, 50m 단위로 트래픽을 감시하며 과부하 가능성에 대응했고, 임시 통신 시설과 현장 인력 운영도 병행했다. 밀집 행사와 외국인 이용 수요가 동시에 늘어나는 환경에서 AI 기반 자율 네트워크 운영의 현장 적용 가능성을 확인한 사례로 해석된다.
