Acquisition of Solarflare Provides Integrated Data Center Solutions

Xilinx has decided to shift its core strategy from being a silicon supplier to a next-generation platform company, focusing on data center acceleration solutions.

To this end, Xilinx views network interface technology as the core technology for data sensor acceleration and has been continuously integrating products with Solarflare, which can realize this, and has completed the acquisition process for establishing a subsidiary.

Earlier this year, Xilinx and Solarflare demonstrated a single-chip FPGA-based 100Gb SmartNIC capable of transmitting and receiving 100 million packets per second at less than 75 watts, marking the company's continued collaboration and strategic investment in advanced networking.

Solarflare's SmartNIC family of intelligent network interface cards (NICs) and software deliver industry-leading performance and ultra-low latency networking. The completion of the acquisition of Solarflare strengthens Xilinx's product line and provides data center customers with additional technology and expertise to better serve their needs.

A new class of software and hardware adaptable SmartNIC developed by Solarflare and Xilinx runs network, storage, and compute acceleration directly on the network interface card, eliminating the need to run these workloads on servers.

Xilinx also handles core workloads in data centers.Solarflare will integrate its networking technology into its Alveo portfolio of adaptive accelerator cards.

Xilinx said in a statement that the acquisition "marks a significant milestone in our ability to deliver robust and complete data center solutions for Xilinx customers," adding that the acquisition of Solarflare brings "industry-leading technology and additional expertise in networking hardware and software, firmware, and drivers."
