Domestic PC shipments reached 990,000 units in the second quarter of 2019, up 4.2% year-over-year.
Published2019.08.14 07:12According to a recent domestic PC market research analysis by IDC Korea, domestic PC shipments in the second quarter of 2019 increased by 4.2% year-on-year to 490,000 desktops, 500,000 laptops, and a total of 990,000 units.
As Intel processor supply gradually stabilizes and Windows 7 technical support ends in January next year, replacement units of commercial PCs that had been delayed are being shipped this quarter, driving market growth.
By industry, the financial sector has recently signed a number of annual contracts for PC purchases, while the public sector has seen an increase in desktops and the introduction of laptops for faculty and staff.
On the other hand, the consumer sector shipped 460,000 units, a 4.4% decrease year-on-year.
Competition among premium detachable tablets and laptops is heating up, and ultra-slim devices with a thickness of 18<21mm have actually decreased slightly compared to the previous year.
Gaming PC shipments also appeared to remain at the same level as the previous year. Nvidia's GTX 16 series has been released to the market, but replacement demand appears to have slowed down as most PC games in the rankings can be played comfortably on existing GTX 1050/1060 level cards.
Park Dan-a, a researcher at IDC Korea, said, "Despite growth this quarter compared to the same quarter last year, overall shipments for the first half of 2019 decreased by 2.5% year-over-year to 2.42 million units. The domestic PC market is already saturated, so it's premature to recognize this as a momentum for a growth shift."
In addition, Kwon Sang-jun, director of IDC Korea, said, "The commercial market is at a point where the work environment needs to change as the millennial generation is being hired and employee experience becomes more important than work productivity," adding, "With the introduction of the 52-hour workweek, building a modernized workplace and introducing smart and intelligent computing devices tailored to the work characteristics of each employee will become essential elements for strengthening corporate competitiveness."

Smartphone sales in 2019 expected to see worst decline ever
Gartner announced its forecast for global device shipments in 2019. Global shipments of devices including PCs, tablets, and mobile phones in 2019 are expected to total 2.2 billion units, representing a 3.3% decline compared to the previous year. In particular, the mobile phone market is projected to decline by 3.8% and show the weakest performance among device categories. Additionally, in 2020, mobile phones equipped with 5G capabilities are expected to account for 6% of total mobile phone revenue. As 5G adoption increases, user experience will improve and prices will decrease, leading to a dramatic growth where 5G phones are projected to account for 51% of mobile phone revenue by 2023. PC shipments in 2019 are forecast to record 257 million units, a 1% decline compared to 2018.

According to Gartner, global consumer smartphone sales in 2019 are expected to reach 1.5 billion units, representing a 2.5% decline year-over-year. Gartner anticipates that smartphone sales will rebound in 2020, supported by the widespread availability of 5G models and aggressive 5G service package promotions from telecom operators worldwide. In 2020, the launch of Apple's first 5G iPhone is also expected to drive smartphone upgrades among iPhone users. Meanwhile, Huawei faced challenges in Europe, the Middle East, Africa, and South America in late Q2 2019 due to the U.S.-China trade dispute, but maintained its leading position in the Chinese domestic market.

Databricks Unveils Open AI Security Monitoring 'Lakewatch'
Databricks entered the security market on March 24 by unveiling LakeWatch, an open-source agentic SIEM. The core functionality of this product is to integrate and analyze security, IT, and business data in a single environment to support AI-based threat detection and investigation. The company explained that it reduces the limitations of existing security operations centers, which have had to forgo some data due to high cost structures, and enables large-scale data analysis and automation based on open formats and ecosystems. LakeWatch is currently offered as a private preview, with Adobe and Dropbox mentioned as early customers. Databricks also announced an expanded partnership with Anthropic as well as the acquisition of Antimatter and SiftD.ai.
