Expansion and Reorganization of the 5G Security Technology Advisory Council

A forum was established to review and discuss security issues arising from the spread of 5G.

The Ministry of Science and ICT announced on the 19th that it has formed and launched the '5G Security Council' to examine newly emerging security issues and conduct in-depth discussions following the full-scale introduction and expansion of 5G.

The council is an expanded and reorganized version of the '5G Security Technology Advisory Council' that has been in operation since October of last year.

It was composed of about 50 experts from various fields, including academia, telecommunications companies, manufacturers, security firms, the Korea Internet & Security Agency, the Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute, the Korea Information and Communications Technology Association, and the Ministry of Science and ICT.

The council will operate in three divisions: policy, technology, and standards. The secretaries for each division will be the Korea Internet & Security Agency (policy), the Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (technology), and the Korea Information and Communications Technology Association (standards).

In principle, plenary meetings and subcommittee meetings will be held once a quarter, but additional meetings will be held if necessary.

At the council meeting held on this day, a chairperson and subcommittee heads to preside over the meeting were elected from among academic experts, regarding the detailed operational plan of the councilWe discussed the matter and freely debated security issues and trends related to 5G.

Professor Jeong Tae-myeong of Sungkyunkwan University was appointed as the head of the Policy Division, while Professors Yoo Il-seon and Yeom Heung-yeol of Soonchunhyang University were appointed as the heads of the Technology Division and the Standards Division, respectively.

Going forward, through meetings of each subcommittee, we plan to hold in-depth discussions on specific topics such as 5G security policies of major developed countries, core 5G network security threats and response technologies, and trends in international standardization of 5G security, and to explore policy directions and institutional improvement measures regarding these topics.

Jang Seok-young, Head of the Information and Communication Policy Office at the Ministry of Science and ICT, stated, “I hope that the council will serve as an opportunity to practically strengthen 5G network security by gathering the wisdom of various experts,” adding, “We will pursue policies by referring to the results of the council’s discussions so that Korea can lead the field of 5G security.”
