8K Association Confirms Key Standards for Next-Generation 8K Displays

On August 30, the 8K Association announced standards for key performance and specifications for 8K TVs.
The 8K Association is a global non-profit organization aiming to establish 8K-related standards and expand the ecosystem, and currently, 16 companies including Samsung Electronics, TV and panel manufacturers, SoC chip companies, and content companies are participating.
The 8K TV standards announced this time were established based on current and future technology trends with the participation of member companies related to displays, SoC chips, and content.
The standards established by the 8K Association this time include definitions for key specifications for displays, 8K signal input, input terminal specifications, media formats, etc.
The resolution is specified as 7680 × 4320, and the frame rate as 24p, 30p, or 60p (Frames per Second).
The maximum display brightness must be 600 nits or higher, the video transmission interface must be HDMI 2.1, and the video compression codec must be HEVC (High EfficiencyIt was decided as the ency Video Codec.
The 8K Association plans to finalize the methods and procedures in the near future through consultation with member companies so that a certification logo can be affixed to 8K TVs that meet the standards announced this time.
Meanwhile, the 8K Association started with five member companies this January, including Samsung, Panasonic, Hisense, TCL, and AUO, but has now expanded to a total of 16 member companies, including Samsung Display, Innolux, Intel, Novatek, V Silicon, Xperi, Astro Design, Lewis Pictures, Atem, Tencent, and Chili.
Going forward, the 8K Association plans to secure various member companies, including not only TV and panel manufacturers but also content production and distribution companies.
Chris Chinnock, Senior Steering Committee Member of the 8K Association, stated, “The 8K Association is doing a very important job in the growth of next-generation video technology, such as defining the key attributes of 8K TV technology,” adding, “The passion and cooperation of our members to expand the 8K ecosystem will ultimately grow the 8K market.”
Meanwhile, LG Electronics and Sharp are not participating in the 8K association led by Samsung Electronics.

ETRI Develops Hologram 250 Times Sharper Than 8K
홀로그램 표현에는 주로 액정을 이용한 공간 광변조 기술이 쓰인다. 액정에 전압을 걸어 빛의 위상을 바꿔 영상을 만드는 방식이다. 이때 홀로그램 영상의 화질과 시야각을 높이기 위해서는 액정에 쓰이는 소자의 픽셀사이의 간격을 줄이는 것이 관건이다. 한국전자통신연구원은 픽셀의 크기와 픽셀 간격을 마이크로미터 수준으로 대폭 줄여 30도 시야각을 갖고 화질을 크게 높일 수 있는 새로운 픽셀 구조 기술을 개발했다고 23일 밝혔다. 이를 통해 세계에서 가장 작은 1㎛ 픽셀 피치소자를 적용, 72K 해상도를 구현하는 패널개발이 가능할 전망이다.

Samsung Electronics Presents 8K Roadmap at 8K Display Summit

At this event, Samsung Electronics presented the latest technology trends and roadmap for 8K.
